Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

An added bonus is my cranky 2nd gear shift/grind issue is GONE.
Leading evidence: 'gone' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'gone' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect battery' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I really don't want to disconnect the battery if I don't have to.

Jack the rear of the car up high enough to crawl under , make sure to use jack stands .
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

An added bonus is my cranky 2nd gear shift/grind issue is GONE.
I have read the posts about this being a shift cable issue. I want to just tow the car to my Indy and not futz with trying to find exactly what has broken or become dislodged. Shifter moves up and down but no gears engage. No side to side movement. Drove car home 1.5mi in 1st gear. Now its head first in garage with no way to back
out.
So a couple questions.
1) Any way to easily force the car into neutral so I can push it back out of the garage?
2) With a flat bed tow truck can he attach straps to the rear wheels and lift it up and on to the flat bed that way?
Prior to this happened the car did not want to go into 2nd gear. Then I noticed the shifter went limp and could not shift at all.
Thank you for any advice you can provide.
Sounds like shifter cable has come off or dislodged at the transmission . Jack the rear of the car up high enough to crawl under , make sure to use jack stands . Passenger side of transmission you will see two cables that slide into a metal bracket . Just past that bracket you will see the ends of the cables that snap over ball ends . You should be able to wiggle/push/pull where the cables snap onto until you hit neutral . Spin the wheels to ensure you have found neutral .
If one or both of the cable ends have become dislodged have your Indy mechanic drill the cable bracket for safety wire . Regardless of new or old cables safety wire is an insurance policy to keep you from being stranded . Good luck .
Thanks guys. Much appreciated! Duh on my part regarding depressing the clutch.
If I ask my girlfriend to do it Ill be saddled with a long honey do work list. Easier to drop the tranny and rebuild! LOL.
I decided to grow a pair and remove the center console to take a closer look. The shifter moves up and down loosely but will not move left to right at all. Its just stuck in first gear. I've watched all the You Tube videos. Console looks easy enough to remove. It sounds like the issue is at the shifter and perhaps the left/right cable has become dislodged? I will update the thread if I learn anything.
But one question I have is this: Do I need to disconnect the negative battery cable since I will be removing the cables to the window actuator switches? I really don't want to disconnect the battery if I don't have to. Thanks!
It is more likely to have come undone at the transmission. There are clips that can break at both the shifter end and the transmission end.
You do not have to disconnect the battery.
This thread shows both ends.

It's the black cable that controls the front to back.
I removed the center console. The black side moves up and down, the blue side does not move at all. Cables are both connected to the shifter. Does this confirm that the disconnect is on the transmission side? Thank you. (See pics)

It has either broken or come off at the transmission end.
usually it will have popped out the fork or could have come off where the cable end attaches to the transmission.
Both are marked with a black X in the photo.
As most noted, Issue was that shifter cable became dislodged from transmission. EPE Natick, MA does great work. Jerry added clips similar to what they do on track cars to hold the connection in place permanently.
An added bonus is my cranky 2nd gear shift/grind issue is GONE. So if you have this problem maybe check and firmly secure your shifter cable connections.
Cant say enough about EPE. Quality work with zero BS. I also added Bilstein shocks and struts which were badly needed at 118k miles.
