Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The majority of car sales in Japan are via auction houses which run most every day of the week.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently found and purchased a 2000 C2 6MT out of Japan. I knew when I bought it that it had a some rare options including the X51 package. It is also factory equipped with M030 suspension, AeroCup kit, Sport Design 18" wheels, sport hardback seats, litronic/xenon head lamps, sunroof delete, X54 stainless steel exhaust tips, XE3 auto dimming rear view mirror, and various bits of leather/carbon/aluminum interior trim. Once I recieved the car and started checking it over I noticed the engine S/N was odd. I have since determined the engine is a 1999 M96/02S configuration (68X prefix) that was stamped with a 68Y prefix to indicate 2000 model year. 68Y does not show up in any Porsche documentation or literature, but I have confirmed this engine was installed by Porsche at Werk 1 in early 2000 under the "Sonderwunsch" program. The DME also records the engine with a 68Y prefix. Documentation I have found seems to indicate there were no 996's produced in 2000 with the X51 package (I assume this was due to the launch of the GT3 in ROW markets), yet this car managed to somehow find it's way through the factory order books. In essence, it appears to be a GT3 predecessor with the X51 instead of the Mezger. I currently have an inquiry in with Porsche head office about this car, it will be interesting to see how they reply.
Here are a few pictures of the car when it was for sale, I am currently going through the mechanicals and getting it road worthy again as it sat for many years. The curent mileage is 75,000 kilometers (46K miles).
Nice find! There is another original Japanese 1999 C2 for sale on auto trader located in Winnipeg.
I heard the Yen is down - making it attractive to buy cars there?
This is cool and congrats on the rare find! The X51 on a .1 car is especially cool. They're more common on .2 cars but never .1 came to NA I believe. What was the importing experience like?
The exchange rate is favourable right now, and good low mileage cars are more plentiful in Japan than here in NA. Obviously you need to be comfortable buying cars sight unseen, but this is my 3rd import from Japan and all have exceeded my expections thus far.
996.1 cars with the X51 package never met NA emissions, so you are correct, they were never sold new in NA. I saw a quote that less than 1500 996.1 cars were built with the X51 package.
Importing was simple, but our rules here in Canada probably make it easier than importing to the US. We can import freely once a car reaches 15 years old. The toughest part is the wait!
This on a 996? Where do I sign up?!? Say what you want but I love some of the Japanese car subcultures.
Seriously though - that's awesome that's it's a fairly easy process. I know there are some specialty dealers, mostly CA I think that import Japanese cars and sell them in the US. The handle all the logistics and legalization but no doubt you pay a premium.
All the warning labels and stickers are in Japanese, but all the controls are labeled in English like every other Porsche sold around the world. It's neat to have these market specific labels/stickers still intact on the car.
There are several Japanese internet sites similar to Cars.com, Trader, etc. you can look at (some links below). They are tricky to navigate at first until you understand how they list/catagorize cars. You can sort by year, body style, transmission, etc. Make sure you have Google translate on! Like any used car market, not all are good deals or resonably priced...dealers in Japan do a lot of "fishing" to guage interest.
The majority of car sales in Japan are via auction houses which run most every day of the week. This is where the best deals are. Each car is graded and for the most part are fairly respresented. The large aucton houses in Japan survive off reputation so they try to ensure the car is fully disclosed (condition, accidents, etc.) You do need to work with someone who has access to the auction sites & bidding credentials. I found my car at a dealer in Japan and before I could establish contact with them it was sent to auction. Luckily I already had a Japanese import agent who I previously worked with and he bid for me. A lot of cars in the 23-24 year old range are currently being bought up and stored in either Japan or Canada until they are eligible for import into the US.
As a side note, most non-Japanese manufactured luxury or exotic cars in Japan are LHD, it is seen somewhat as a status symbol to own a LHD vehicle in Japan. All the German & Italian marques fall into this catagory.

Really nice find and absolutely a stunning car. Congrats.... Japan has some great deals and unique builds. My friend imports cars from japan and here is an absolutely rare 996.1 GT3 Club Sport from Japan, if anyone is interested....I have been salivating on this one but I like my car build better.
