I installed the short shift kit I already had from my 986 into my 996. I had bought a spare shifter assembly before installing in my 986 so I could go back to stock if I wanted. When I sold the car to a friend, he wanted it back to stock, so I kept the SSK. It shifted smoothly in the 986, which in stock form did not shift as smoothly as my 996 in stock form. I marked the cables with a sharpie before unlatching them from the stock housing so I could place them back in to the SSK housing, but its too notch now. 3rd gear especially. The alignment tool, which I have, only works on the stock shifter. I am not sure how to best align the cables to ensure the smoothest shifting. This is the cheap eBay special SSK, but like I said, it shifted great in the 986 so I believe its just an alignment issue.
