Suggestion
If you choose to get the Koni Special Active shocks, Koni does not recommend using lowering springs on them as it will accelerate its wear/tear but I've been running them for years without issue.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all - as the thread title says, I want to upgrade / refresh my 01 C4 coupe suspension. It currently has the original M030 suspension, which actually rides pretty well on bumpy NZ back roads, but at 150k kms, its a bit tired. No squeaks or funny noises though...
Coilovers are off the menu - here in NZ, fitment of height adjustable suspension involves low-volume vehicle technical certification (which is time consuming and costly) and forever carries the stigma of being a heavily-modified vehicle. So, I'm stuck with struts all round. I`ve had ok outcomes with Koni Sport Yellows on our 986 Boxster S FWIW. I also don`t want to lower the ride height - as it is I've skimmed the base of my FVD sump on a rally bottoming out in dip at speed (don`t worry, an LN sump protector is on its way). Gratuitous muddy (shock horror!) shot showing current ride height below:
Bit muddy after the grasskhana in the wet
In terms of driving - its a weekend / play car; sees about 6-8 track days a year, the odd club sprint (on track), and tarmac rally / tours (Targa Tour).
This means I need to balance out the need for stiff track suspension, and compliance and resistance to bottoming out at 160km/hr on a tarmac rally. It also has to be ok on a road-trip (with the provision that yes, sports cars are firm, and noisy etc). I understand the M030 dampers are Bilstein B4 - any experience with the B6, or is there another damper I should be considering?
I`m looking to get the adjustable Eibach front lower control arms to get a bit more negative camber - anything else I should be doing "while I'm in there"?
Appreciate any advice.
OP - What alignment numbers for front and rear are you wanting to reach? B4 is a nice bit of gear (happy with mine), but several posts mention good words for the Koni Actives. Price and availability may influence your pool of options. Do you have any plan to add spacers for wider track? 7mm front spacers and 15mm rears would bring you to 997 width. Also, have you put any thought to upgrading your sways from M030? If you widen your track and add at least a stiffer rear sway, align at .1 GT3 spec, on stock ride height; you’ll be very pleased with ride characteristics balanced for decent all-around performance.
I advocate for the Koni Special Active. Have them on my 986 Boxster S and cannot recommend them enough to absorb all the bumps in the road. They ride very nice and smooth on most surface roads, but if the road you're driving on is just destroyed, there's not much you can do about it. I've had them for 5 years and do street and track/HPDE duty on mine and absolutely love them. All of my HPDE instructors comment how smooth the suspension is on my car. Also, tires also make a big difference,
If you choose to get the Koni Special Active shocks, Koni does not recommend using lowering springs on them as it will accelerate its wear/tear but I've been running them for years without issue. Koni's recommendation is to use stock springs with the Special Active shocks.
I`m just chasing extra negative camber to even out the front tyre wear - my alignment guy is sourcing the adjustable arms to help with this (as opposed to adjustable strut mounts - i`m keen to keep NVH low). I do have spacers at present - just the factory 5mm ones. Like the coil-overs, non-OEM fitment spacers require low volume certification here, and would make the annual safety checks a nightmare, I had considered the adjustable GT3 anti-roll bars, on the recommendation of my alignment guy again - any feedback on these? Thanks for the suggestion - time to do some comparison shopping.
OP - The Eibach 3-hole rear sways are much cheaper than GT3 bars and not overkill. Porsche 996 OE spacers (as per Tequipment) are 5 and 17mm, so is that considered low volume cert required if you use those?
To give you an idea of my suspension:
M030 B4’s and springs (which I switched to Eibach Pro for lowering to GT3 height)
Eibach 3-hole rear and M030 front sway
15mm spacers all corners
GT3 front LCA’s
Stock OEM everything else parts
GT3 stock alignment
Do you know what adjustable control arms he's getting? Demon Motorsports sells adjustable forged 997 arms and inner arms at a very reasonable price, that's what I'll be using on my car.
I read the thread. Just get your car certified and swap them out. It doesn't take that long.
Edit: Koni Yellows ride like trash in general, if you really don't want to bother, I would just get your Bilsteins revalved and call it a day.
You mentioned the age of the vehicle but not the mileage. Please add this.
150' km, just read your post again.
Koni special active will control the car's body (keep it flat) during cornering and braking/accelerating without compromising mechanical grip through the tyres. Their valve system is comparable to hlins DFV in what it can achieve in this respect and modern compared to Bilstein's valving from that era even in OEM Porsche spec.
Still, having your M030 shock absorbers refurbished by Bilstein is an option, although from what I gather from your post, a re-valve to another spec I wouldn't consider.
Call them to find out what service they provide and what sort of preliminary checks you can do in order to establish whether you can expect an improvement or whether they are good for many more miles of service in their current condition.
Actually, there might be a way around the coil over issue for you. Was the 996 GT3 available in NZ? If so, that car had factory H&R/Bilstein coil overs. Perhaps if you use factory parts you can legally get around the regulations? Shipping might be expensive, but complete setups pop up on ebay and in the classifieds on here with relative frequency for reasonable prices.
Thanks for the response bcrdukes. You are the first I have personally run across with this set up. I am leaning toward the HR sports as they have a nice drop but didnt want to crash through bumps. Sounds like you have it dialed.
I assume the top mounts are for additional camber, yes?
Cheers - that's an option I'm looking into. It all comes down to how they interpret what OE means - and whether they`ll allow OE height adjustable suspension from a GT3 on a C4. The rules i`m working to are below:
NZ LVVTA rules
The challenge with the GT3 coilovers, is finding a set - they`re pretty thin on the ground down here. You guys in the Northern Hemisphere don`t know how lucky you are in terms of parts access and pricing. Unless anyone reading this has a set they want to sell....

@hbdunn
for his input. His car is kind of stupid fast and is not on a coilover setup.
Whatever he did, that's what you want to do and if you can wheel it, you will make a lot of people look pretty silly.
