It sat for 3 months disconnected over the winter and had just enough juice to start the car when I pulled it out of storage.

Did a quick charge and it started, put the top down, ran my errands and when I got home the battery showed 13.5v with the engine running and 12.5 immediately after I shut it off.

Simple enough....I use the cigarette lighter socket so it is super easy.

This is not a good way to check for a current draw in a modern car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

HI,
MY 2000 C4 cab is having battery and/or starting issues. I've read through a bunch of threads but haven't found the answer yet. Anyhow, the AGM Die Hard has been losing enough charge that the car won't start in the morning. It sat for 3 months disconnected over the winter and had just enough juice to start the car when I pulled it out of storage. Since then cold starting has gradually gotten worse. At first, if the car sat for a week or so, it might need some time on the charger. Lately, it has been a couple of days or so. Put it on the charger yesterday, drove it this morning to pick up my wife, sat for maybe five minutes with the car off but radio on and needed a jump! Drove the three miles home, turned it off and it restarted just fine. Battery was checked twice at the local parts store, first out of the car - showed good but down on overall power. Went back with the car and both the battery and alternator showed good . The battery loses a tenth of a volt overnight, usually tests at 12.2-3v and when just off the charger shows 12.6v. Any ideas or suggestions? I haven't shown a drain but maybe I need a new meter. Thanks in advance!
Tim
You need to put an ammeter in series with it with it not running. The current draw should be less than 100 milliamps after 5 minutes. Considering this is an old car, it probably go to that level almost immediately after the key is removed. Just hook it up with the key removed.
If it is drawing something like 0.5 amps continuously, it's going to drain the battery, especially if it is not healthy. You either have a large current draw with the car off or your battery is toast.
If you have a current draw, you just pull one fuse at a time and look at the ammeter to see when you find the load that has issues and then you troubleshoot from there.
If the battery is more than 5-7 years old, you might want to start by replacing it, they are not very expensive.
Hi All,
Thanks for the replies and advice. Jumped in this morning, battery read 12.0v and it only turned over once. Did a quick charge and it started, put the top down, ran my errands and when I got home the battery showed 13.5v with the engine running and 12.5 immediately after I shut it off. Voltage did star to drop but by .01 increments. The jump start studs in the engine bay showed 12.45v. As an aside, the top seemed a little slow to close. Disconnected the negative terminal and hooked my new meter in series. At the 20m setting, it read 0.15 - I assume this is 150ma. I then pulled every fuse one at t at a time and the meter never changed. Now what - New battery? Ground cable? Starter and/or + cable?
