I recently replaced the cv joints on the front driveshafts of my C4S, car drives fine but since doing so I get PSM/ABS light on the dash when driving.

Suggestion
Lazy shops will set the alignment anywhere and then adjust the steering wheel to compensate which is a no-go on these cars and should be a no-go on all cars, but they keep doing it.

I have a new/used but good steering angle sensor, but havent installed it yet (looks like a nightmare job and I now live 1 1/2 - 2 hrs from my shop depending on traffic).

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just adding some closure here, got a 4 wheel alignment and it solved everything.
I recently replaced the cv joints on the front driveshafts of my C4S, car drives fine but since doing so I get PSM/ABS light on the dash when driving. The warnings go off when you restart the car, and if you manually turn off the PSM the lights do not come on at all. If you turn on the PSM while driving, the lights come on instantly.
Does it sound more like I accidently loosened a sensor or something?
Thanks in advance, my 996 gurus
If u did not get the strut tops exactly in the same spot u may need an alighnment but your issue sounds like a bad abs harness or connection. A good scanner can read individual wheel speed and help u norrow down the issue
interesting thank you for the tip. i am reading that now in the other thread about phantom PSM/ABS lights that durametric cannot read or clear. That is also one of my conditions, durametric cannot see or clear the faults, even if I clear all modules.
looks like I have the same symptoms that
@Dr_Strangelove
attributes to the steering angle sensor or the wheel speed sensor.
Given that I was just working on the front driveshafts i feel it's more likely I messed up a wheel speed sensor. I will have to have a look.
I for sure messed up the toe someway or another. I noticed now on a short test drive the wheel is cocked about 15 degrees to the right. Didn't adjust the tie rods so I must've done something else boneheaded to make it come out of alignment. Gonna take it for an alignment and see if that fixes it I guess. All the suspension components look good to me, nothing looks damaged.
Ive had the same symptoms for over a year now (maybe 2). It all started after an alignment. I did replace one wheel speed sensor (right front) which was causing abs problems - that was fixed. My abs/psm lights come on after 6 miles, and I have a steering angle sensor fault in Durametric (I dont remember the # off hand). I have a new/used but good steering angle sensor, but havent installed it yet (looks like a nightmare job and I now live 1 1/2 - 2 hrs from my shop depending on traffic).
Durametric claims to read and reset the steering angle sensor - but it does neither. PIWIS can read the value of the steering angle sensor and recalibrate it if needed.
For sure, if the steering wheel isn't straight when driving straight that's going to cause PSM errors. More accurately if the steering angle sensor isn't reading close to 0 degrees when driving straight.
When you get the alignment be absolutely sure that the shop centers the steering wheel before starting. Lazy shops will set the alignment anywhere and then adjust the steering wheel to compensate which is a no-go on these cars and should be a no-go on all cars, but they keep doing it.
Yeah, I think this^^^ is exactly what happened, but they wouldnt cop to it, so Im stuck with these lights coming on after 6 miles. I dont think theres even anything wrong with my steering angle sensor - hence not wanting to change it out. I dont want to take it to the local Porsche dealer either as they are robbers 😩
Just adding some closure here, got a 4 wheel alignment and it solved everything. Wheel is now straight and no dashboard lights. Went for a long drive with the PSM on to confirm.
It was only the front toe that was off, but it was way off. Best part is the tire shop did the alignment for free, since they are same shop that informed be about the cracked CV boot when I get new tires there a month ago it was under their alignment warranty period. Really nice guys.
Did they mention doing anything with the steering angle sensor? Reset/Calibration? Im wondering whether I should just bite the bullet, & bring it to a local alignment guy
Nah they did not. When I dropped it off I asked them if they'd be sure to set the steering wheel straight before starting the alignment. When I picked up they didn't mention anything out of the ordinary to me. They gave me the print-out with all my before and after measurements and sent me on my way. I don't think they did anything special.
