Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had to move some things around to Delete my lower console; while I was at it I moved little-used features away and brought other ones closer to the steering wheel.

It may be comically easy to rearrange them but changing sides makes the icons turn upside down.

I know that Porsche was near bankruptcy around this time but its not logical that they used whatever they had in store to assemble a car???

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ive just bought myself a Porsche 996 C4S and have a question regarding the location of the button for activating the original Porsche Exhaust System.
On my car, the button is placed on the right side of the screen below the button for the rear window heat.
On EVERY other car Ive seen the button is located to the LEFT of the screen below the PSM Off button.
According to the sticker in the luggage room and service book the car is equipped with XLF from new.
Why can it differ between cars?
Also, in my car the exhaust is loud my default and when pressing the button the car goes into silent mode.
Any idea if somethings changed or whats happened to my car?
I have a 2002 with PSE. My car did not have a control button at all. I installed one myself. I found the factory wiring connected to the blank at the lower right position, where your switch is. I didn't try to see if it was possible to locate it elsewhere.
From what I've been able to gather, yes there are differences among cars. It's almost as though Porsche built them with what they had available at the time.
FWIW I also did the relay mod so PSE does not go quiet from 30 to 45MPH. Recommended.
EDIT: my car defaults to loud every time the ignition is cycled off/on. Pressing the button illuminates it and quiets the exhaust. Another press flips it back to loud and turns off the light.
1. Congrats! You're going to have a blast with your C4S.
2. The switches on the horseshoe can be moved among their locations with remarkable ease. I had to move some things around to Delete my lower console; while I was at it I moved little-used features away and brought other ones closer to the steering wheel. Each of those switches can be in whichever opening you choose, in a matter of minutes.
3. I'm second owner of a car that had PSE installed (and every bit of its almost-obsessive service conducted) at the PO's local, Premier, dealer. Like yours, my car defaults to Sport and hushes when I hit the button. Or, it would hush, if I ever hit that button again!
Feels strange that Porsche placed the button at different places on a mass produced car?
I know that Porsche was near bankruptcy around this time but its not logical that they used whatever they had in store to assemble a car???
The amazing thing to me is that there appear to be (L) and (R) versions of the button! It's not the case that they just flipped over the button and put it in any old spot - it was clearly intentional.
Somebody at the assembly line took an own initiative and swapped places just for fun 🤣
I cant see any logic behind the reason the buttons are at different locations on cars that should be identical.
Really, it doesn't matter but i will have a hard time getting peace of mind before the matter is solved and explained.
The Germans can be like this. VW Corrados were assembled with whatever parts came to hand that day. VR6 hood on a G60? G60 fenders on a VR6? Check engine light or not? All totally random.
Also I believe Porsche wasn't all that far removed from essentially hand building cars. The 996 was their first real attempt at "mass" production. 20 years on it seems quaint but I wonder what it was like in the dealerships at the time.

It's
terribly
easy for an owner to re-distribute those switches according to his/her preferences. I am confident that the factory put all the PSE switches, on cars so equipped, in a single spot. Maybe a PO would rather have their rear wiper switch Here and PSE there; maybe "all blanks on the passenger side of the horseshoe" occurred to a bored owner over the winter.
The current location of your {PSE; seat heater; PSM; rear wiper} switch tells you right next to Nothing about where the factory put it or why. Because the horseshoe switches are comically easy to reconfigure.
Agree that the switches are comically easy to move around. What I can't wrap my head around is that if you flipped the PSE switch (which is on the left on my car), the icon would be upside down. They clearly
intended
some of these switches to be on the right, because they painted the icon on that way.
