A couple years ago i purchased this 98 build 1999 carrera 3.4, manual, with a dealer installed aero kit.

Now that I have run my new setup, I can recommend it as an improvement, measurable, over what I was running previously.

I know the 996 world is possibly cheaper to play in than maybe newer gt3s, but its all bad once you start making these kinds of changes 🤣 eyes wide shut!

As far as brake upgrades - I got pretty far on the stock stuff on a relatively similar setup to what you are running now, fade was a minor issue at times, but not to the extent I feel like you are describing you are having.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As a long time lurker, i have memeberized myself! Looking forward to posting and further educating myself on these wonderful cars!
Ive come from old bmws and large turbochargers!
Wanting a change, i was always in awe of the shape of 911s and 996s in particular were appealing due to the fact that i thought they were undervalued, and a fantastic bang for your buck in the P car world.
A couple years ago i purchased this 98 build 1999 carrera 3.4, manual, with a dealer installed aero kit. I have since been making little tweaks and ive never been more in love with a car!
My long term plans are to keep this car lightweight and fun, and also NA. Im not sure ar this point if I will build an M96 and punch it out possibly with schrick camshafts, or swap to a newer engine, something along the lines of a 997 3.8, or maybe go crazy and attempt a 991 gt3 engine conversion. This is how the car sits now. I just sold my 650whp E36 and im excited to do some more stuff with this 996!

The car feels awesome at the moment, for the price the clubsport version of the h&rs feels awesome, however they are rock hard spill your coffee on the street. But I dont mind a bit!
my last hpde at thunderhill raceway 2 mile course, the car turned 1.26 laps. These 660s really have a ton of grip and ive had many different 200tw tires in this car and these are my favorites by far at the moment. I know the car is setup fairly well, because it was faster than two different 991s gt3s that day and a gt4. Of course its all driver, but it was pretty fun to run faster times than the big dog gt3s. Im sure on different tracks or with different drivers i would get smoked, but the drivers were surprised and so was I! Good little 3.4!!
The only complaint i have so far is the brakes are underwhelming. They overheat quickly so im open to suggestions there. I trail brake the crap out of the car and a brake upgrade is number one on my list. Ive done the usual track preparation but its not enough. I currently have sebro slotted rotors, and porterfield R4 track pads, and have flushed multiple times with castrol srf fluid.
i had a previous set of factory rotors and pagid yellow i believe and i had all the same problems. A friend of mine told me it can be fixed with cup car brake ducts and cutting a hole in the fender liner to get more air on them.
the next thing im doing to do is try the larger giro discs, or do something else all together. Im open for criticism! And help!
Ive done some mild weight reduction, but dont want to go crazy. Im done with stripped race cars on the street. I want this to be fully streetable with AC.
another issue i need to address is the coolant temps get quite high, 3/4 and beyond on the track if I hot lap, is the center radiator the way to go? Lower temp thermostat? Ive cleaned the radiators with no dice.
Enough ranting, heres the car! It made 287whp on a dynojet, and weighs 2700, making it decently quick for a 99 carrera 2!
For track brakes go with either the 997 cup or the 6-gt3 set up. Upgrade the mc to the 997 unit. I assume u dont have psm, if u do the mc upgrade may need some additional items to not trip a code.
Both set ups will work well but do your research because the mounting is different and u will need adaptor plates or different uprights. Make sure u match the system with cooling ducts too.
Great looking car. I would be very intrested in how u got the car to 2700lbs? Even stripped out race cars with plastic doors and windows r barely under 2800lbs.
Here is my build thread and there is what i did for brakes toward the end.

awesome community so far, i am maybe a little toooo enthusiastic at times! But i mean only well by it. I will be checking out your thread asap!
As you prob know the 99 c2s started at 2900, so all the little things add up. I havent wanted to pull anything that makes it unstreetable, but i guess all the small things add up to something. The easiest weight reduction was switching the seats, and pulling the rears and all the belts ect, i then pulled the carpet from seats back and dry iced and scraped out the sound deadening, gutted the frunk, lost a couple lbs with the omp, possibly with coilovers shed some weight, and for sure lost a lot with the exhaust. Nothing crazy but all in all very close to 200lbs off of the car. And its very noticeable, the sound deadening was the most detrimental to street driving but doesn't bother me at all. Not sure i lost much if any running this much tire on the .2 gt3 wheels. I like the way they look though, even on a 996.1
A member on here lowpues speed yellow 996 has been a driving inspiration for my build if we are going to call it that, along with zbombs confused 996. I stand exactly where he does with wanting a streetable car that is fun and puts up a good fight on the track. But not so far that its miserable on the street. With my previous bmws whats happened is they slowly become full race cars and then they stop being driven on the street and i loose interest, i dont have the time or funding to track my car every weekend, im more in the 5-6 track days per year group. Id love to do more but, thats what i can afford at the moment. So, the car does end up being driven hard on the street and im lucky enough to have some insanly awesome driving roads within 10 minutes from my house, so naturally there is some canyon driving happening
As far as weight reduction future plans are to delete the sunroof possibly with the carbon roof skin ive seen available, but not sure if i want to take that plunge due to the fact that the headliner is perfect and i would want to swap to a early 996 non sunroof headliner and not sure if thats possible or what that would cost. I also would like to pull the airbags in the door panels. I was hoping that the cup brake ducts and some giro discs and moving back to pagid yellows would solve my brake issues, while dropping some unsprung weight. But it would suck to go another 3k$ into the stock brakes and have it not work for me, also considering the brembo gt kit and just biting the bullet. Ive read about cayenne calipers and running the front calipers in the back, has anyone done this? The weight penalty, may make my car slower on the track if i can get my stock brakes to work with giros.
I think the most urgent thing i need to do is install the third radiator. When its 100 degrees out my cooling system does not cope well.
Thank you! I see you 👀
Ill hop into that thread shortly, i have an oregon raceway park event coming up and im going to try to get some sort of onboard or camera setup going on finally, im the master of doing days and coming back without a single picture because im so jacked on driving i forget about anything else happening 🤣
My torque solutions underdrive pulley broke in half on my last track day and whilst walking around was able to snap some pics of other cars the ol 996 made an impression on. And a bonus canyon picture, our roads are bumpy! ☠️
As far as brake upgrades - I got pretty far on the stock stuff on a relatively similar setup to what you are running now, fade was a minor issue at times, but not to the extent I feel like you are describing you are having.
Now that I have run my new setup, I can recommend it as an improvement, measurable, over what I was running previously. The caveats - WHEELS, you need wheels that will clear 380MM rotors. COST, while you can find used calipers relatively affordable, the rotors are most certainly NOT very affordable, at least in the context the 996 crowd is accustomed to.

I run a master out of a 996 cup car, Hawk DTC60 pads and SRF fluid.
The ABS is pretty happy although I do wander into ice mode more frequently, don't have a solution for that. Slowing the initial stab of the brake down just a touch seems to make a big difference but I don't have data on this yet to quantify, hoping to get that soon.
ETA.... If you have PSM - Disable it. if you're driving fast it is likely intervening frequently and anecdotally, I believe led to failure of my ABS pump. If the ABS fails - you will know it on the next turn. It will also work the rear brakes a ton.
luckilly, No psm on my 98 build. No traction control no nothing. I like that about the early cars. Just a throttle cable and your foot in charge.
good tip and info on the brakes man, is there anyway to find out if they will fit under 18 .2 gt3 wheels? I do run an 18mm spacer up front with these wheels. I would like to keep them if there is anyway to make them work with 380mm.
i guess i should be checking if 380mm brakes will fit under stock 996.2 gt3. Anyone know? That sounds like a really good setup.
This sounds like exactly what im after. I know the 996 world is possibly cheaper to play in than maybe newer gt3s, but its all bad once you start making these kinds of changes 🤣 eyes wide shut!
To me, there is just something cool about being the underdog, keeping up with more expensive cars and making something your own without feeling bad about it. I feel like the 996 is the perfect 911 to have fun with.
I enjoy smoking new cars too and share your feelings on the guilt free modifying experience, especially with how potent they become with the right stuff being addresses and wheeled hard, I'm not a great driver, but the car certainly makes me look good.
Not much help on the GT3 wheel fitment with the 380 setup - sorry my guy.
Congrats and thanks for the inspiration to put the parts I have on my early 996 as well.
