Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'least of my worries' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'least of my worries' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check bores as well' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

0.2 may possibly suffer more from bore scoring due to evolution in compounds from the 0.1, but bore scoring has been easily mitigated with more frequent oil changes throughout its life.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Folks,
Hope everyone is well. It's been a while since I've posted in this forum since moving over to the 986 Boxster side.
I used to own a 2004 Carrera C2 in Cobalt blue. Absolutely loved the car to the point where I rarely drove it. It had very low mileage (69,500KM) when I sold it. I regret doing that to this very day as I sold it and moved across the country for work. I picked up a 986.1 Boxster S to satisfy the itch as a cheap solution. Do I like the Boxster? Yes, but it's not a 911 and it's mostly used as my track toy.
I've noticed that 996 prices are all over the place these days and the prices between a 996.1 vs. a 996.2 aren't all that different anymore. I'm open to jumping in to a 996.1 but curious what the biggest differences are between .1 and .2? I think I have my general ideas of what to expect, given that my Boxster S is a .1, but for those of you who have had the experience of jumping between the versions, I'd like to hear it from you. For now, I'm only looking at C2 models. No interest in C4 models. Looking for a daily driver and a well maintained car. Thanks in advance!
I have not owned a .2 but have driven many. After having owned two .1's I am more partial to the cleaner looks of the .1 (personal opinion). Also, earlier .1's have less nannies and a certain "liteness" feel to them. Add in the early engines with the more robust dual row IMS and my money stays with the .1 models.
Here is a good video comparing the two:

Admittedly, I feel the same, especially after owning the .1 Boxster S. So many fewer nannies and lights that could trigger heart-stopping moments and I don't feel like I need to drive it delicately before triggering an error. With the Boxster, I fire her up, let it idle for a quick minute or two and off I go. When I had the .2 996, I worried about IMS exploding all the time.
I'm still torn on the .1 vs. .2 but I think this will really boil down to a combination of things:
1. Availability
2. Timing (market conditions / life etc.)
3. Price
If you can, and I'd highly suggest this, find a .1 and .2 car locally and drive them. Go to a local cars and coffee or similar event and talk to people. You can read stats on the differences all day long but nothing will beat experiencing the cars in person.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Interestingly enough, I've been attending cars and coffee events throughout the local region including track days, autocross and the like. I'm seeing very few 996s these days. It's mostly 997+ that I see.
I have an 02 Boxster S and a 99 996 . I find these both are a little more raw in feeling and feedback . Raw in my opinion is a good thing . In my role as test driver for a local Porsche shop I have driven a lot of them . All have their positive and negative aspects . In regards to the 996 I like the .1 variety the best . Good luck in journey 😋
You can find plenty of 0.2s without stability management. I purposly got one and put on a LSD and it's incredible to drive.
It's all about how you set up your 996 as to how it will feel and drive.
Let's also face it, you either like the look of an 0.1 more or less than an 0.2. I prefer the 0.2 looks more than the 0.1. However, i love the looks of the 0.1 as well.
Pick the one you like the looks of more. Just make sure its mechanically sound.
The 0.2 has to have the ims replaced to be safe. Some of the 0.1s have the better ims, some dont, But ims replacement makes sense.
0.2 may possibly suffer more from bore scoring due to evolution in compounds from the 0.1, but bore scoring has been easily mitigated with more frequent oil changes throughout its life. Run from cars without service records. Please check the bores as well before you buy.
0.1 suffers from D-chunking which is catastrophic, the 0.2 does not.
A good but expensive book for everyone to buy is the Essential Companion by Streather. It reviews just about everything you ever want to know about the 996, including issues, solutions, etc.
In the book Streather discussed D-chunking which was most likely a byproduct of how the factory held the early 996.1 engines by clamps on the cylinders.
Failures occurred when the cylinders broke in a D shape. Some may have occurred on the street, but most occurred on the track. Plenty of pictures here on rennlist of it.
Ouch. Thank you for the heads up on that. I plan to use this potential 996 for daily driving, grocery getting, pick up/drop off kids to school and track/HPDE duty.
Haha all good. I don't really care about IMS exploding, money shifting and bore scoring anymore. D-chunking is probably the least of my worries. I've come to learn that life is short and best to enjoy what we have to the fullest. Thanks all the inputs, guys. Will keep my eyes out and hope to re-join the 996 club.
You nailed it! Find a car you like, buy it, mainain it, & drive the living hell out of it! All of the issues identifed here can be fixed. If you have your health then don't put off what you can do today for an unknown tomorrow. I know far too many people who took the "I'll do it someday" approach and ended up full of regret. If you have the means now, go for it!
