Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

That looks like the normal "wood trim" steering wheel, but the wood part has either been wrapped with an aluminum-look vinyl, or has been replaced with another material, aluminum or otherwise.
Leading evidence: 'Replace with another material, aluminum or otherwise' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good place' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect aigbag' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Probably a good place to start is to pick up a used wheel and either mod it yourself or take it / send it to an upholsterer that can do custom wheels.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I'm thinking I need this in my life. Not sure what they go for but can't seem to get a lead on one.
Does anyone out there know of one available?
Also, what is involved in swapping out steering wheels? Is the airbag unit something that swaps in and out if it's basically the same steering wheel? I have this wheel in all leather in my C4S.
Thanks in advance.
Please disregard the coffee cup in the image,
Note, my car is a manual, so I don't know if there are extra steps for a Tip.
1) disconnect battery
2) Wait 20 minutes
3) Remove 2 torx from rear of airbag (Torx T27)
4) Remove airbag
5) Use small flat blade screwdriver to disconnect aigbag
6) Remove two spade connections for the horn (4 o'clock and 9 o'clock position)
7) Use 24mm socket to remove nut that holds on steering wheel
8) Pull and remove steering wheel (give it a good tug, it's on there tight, but no where near as tight as the shift ****!)
Install is reverse.
Really easy to do.
That looks like the factory 3-spoke wheel with aluminum inserts: 996 347 983 28 A28 for the 6-speed cars, 996 347 983 29 A28 for the tip cars. You should be sitting down when you see the price: $2800 from your friendly Porsche dealer.

EDIT
: looks like
@theprf
and I were responding at the same time. Didn't realize they actually sold one with aluminum inserts. My answer is still probably possible though if you wanted to make your own.
So I have seen this many times and it was sold as an option on the 996. I am just not sure if it was available for USA models. For sure was available in Europe.
They made these with wood inserts also and I've seen it in carbon fiber too....all factory options.
If anyone comes across one for sale (not for $2800) would love to know about it. I see the regular steering wheels on Ebay for roughly $600+ so that would be nice.
Thanks,
Ted
My car came with that wheel. I swapped it out for an all leather wheel. Theres a few tutorials on YouTube that helped me do the swap. Let me know if youre interested.
