POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Everyone, I wanted to start a thread about those high mileages (100k+) 996 which HAVE NOT blow up (yet) and put their owners upside down financially. By reading this forum, most threads are full of "horror" stories of broken 996 which make the ownership terrifying in some ways. I understand, per nature, if nothing happens to your 996 you are less likely to write a post in the forum, but this thread is for the silent majority (hopefully) which enjoys a fairly trouble-free ownership of their loved 996. It will be interesting to capture some information: generation, year, mileage, gearbox, vehicle locations through its life, years of ownership, recent services and one particular detail which makes you love it. I start, I have a Black over Savannah beige 2002 (mk2) C2 coupe with a 6 speeds. It has 102k miles and I had it since April 2020. Recent services : Water pump, thermostat, coolant flush, IMSB (EPS roller bearing with oil feed), RMS, clutch and AOS done at 101k. Car spend its life between Florida, Savannah back to South Florida. The PO had it since 2007. It has the PSE from the factory and I love the sound it makes, even in the hot Florida summer I drive with the windows down to hear the rumble.

POST 2Original post

As I have posted before I am truly a Proud owner of a 1999 tiptronic Ocean Jade Metallic coupe 187K miles and still going strong.

POST 3Original post

Damn Rich, that is one of the coolest looking exteriors ever.. I'll go.. I just picked up a 1999 996 C2 , Arctic Silver, 103k ish miles, spent most of its life in Virginia and the area, most recently down in Florida, now back up to Westchester NY where its been sitting in my garage the last few weeks getting all beautified. I'm enjoying doing everything myself so far including oil change, all of the filter replacements, restored the 21 year old lights - Chemical Guys 5 stage process, amazing results! Swapping them for a siiick deal on like new litronics, and still going through it all. Put on a set of new continental extreme contact sports, gave it the ol euro clear corners, annnnndd the Taco style spoiler. The car came with the side skirts and gt3 style front bumper, I just had to complete the trio. The previous owner spent some real money on getting everything addressed, IMS, RMS, new clutch, water pump, starter, and another laundry list of stuff all within the past year. I'm hoping I can just continue to restore it cosmetically, maintain it, and enjoy. I'll post some pictures but i'm still addressing some stuff, so will have to wait for a before and after...

POST 4Original post

Rich, I LOVE the interior (nephrite green?). I had a chance to buy a low mileage silver with nephrite green when I was first shopping 996s and kick myself for not jumping on it. 1999 996 C4, 135K miles Manual trans, midnight Blue, space gray interior. One nice feature is that it was highly optioned. (Supple leather, full leather, crested seats, 3-spoke wheel, power seats, aluminum trim package, PCM1, litronic), Owned 3 years, but I know the previous two owners so I have maintenance history going back 6 years. Big engine out service 2 owners back for clutch, IMS bearing, AOS, timing chain guides and solenoids at 94k miles. New Jersey car originally, but in FL for the past 10 years. No major repairs under my watch except for general maintenance (engine mounts, coffin arms, transmission mount, and some minor stuff all DIY friendly). Fixed first gear pop-out issue with Gbox detent. This shot was coming back from Petit Le Mans last year.

POST 5Original post

Yup Nephite green leather with carbon and stainless options Not for everyone but I love the strange and unusual 😁 Rich

POST 7Original post

I sold my aerokit with 165k on the clock on the original IMS and I think rear main seal. The water pump had been replaced around 100k.

POST 8Original post

My 2003 C4S just passed 123k miles (purchased from original owner in Oct 2017 at 109k). The original owner took care of the IMS when changing the clutch around 100k miles. I haven't had any issues with the car other than regular wear and tear. Original owner was an older fellow, so has the comfort options (Bose, leather, etc), but none of the performance options. Still more fun to drive than anything else I've had the pleasure of owning.

POST 9Original post

I just passed 133'333 miles yesterday on my '99 996 - sport package, LSD, sport seats, 6MT in Arctic Silver with red interior. Bought it at 83k miles, done 50k in 4 years. The PO was from Tennessee, I've had the car for 4 years. Done tons of maintenance on it - IMS done again 10k miles ago, all cooling hoses replaced, bushings, shocks, mounts, expansion tank, tons of tires, waterpump, aos - but have recently been plagued by cooling issues. Those too shall be resolved, eventually.

POST 10Original post

my 2003 Arctic Silver Metallic with black leather interior just passed 104K miles Purchased from original owner in Dec 2016 in So Cal with 79K miles - took the train down and drove the car home, trial by fire on the 405 3 months ago, replaced Clutch / flywheel, IMS with Solution and RMS, water pump and LT thermostat at 102K (all original) AOS at about 95K It has sport seats, PSE and sport suspension, and 2/3rds of an Aero kit (not a wing fan anyway) 6 MT Pic taken in Carmel during a run up PCH

POST 11Original post

2002 996 C4S. 98,500, tiptronic, well optioned with full leather and factory carbon fiber trim. Car was sold new in Texas and went to Atlanta and NC. Stayed in TX for the majority and has been serviced by Mayo Performance in Dallas for a long time. PO bought it in early 2019 and had all the items on the PPI addressed at that time (brakes/struts & springs, window reg, hood struts, added hollow spokes, etc.) I just picked it up last month. Going in for IMS and AOS next Tuesday. Also currently shopping for a new wheel set up. Why do I love it? It's a PORSCHE!

POST 12Original post

Does it count if the original engine blew up at 1608K miles? There's no replacement for displacement!

POST 13Original post

I have a 99 C2 with 153k miles and a 99 C4 with 128k miles. I just did the IMS, RMS and AOS on the C4. I had a small oil leak at the RMS, so I did the whole show. I inspected the torque converter and decided to replace it. The C2 had the IMS done at 110k, so that will be done when the clutch goes. Both cars run strong but I amazed how much lighter and more quick steering the C2 feels. The C2 is also a 6 speed which makes it a much more sporty car to drive. My C4 is the commuter car that my kids also drive, in fact my son is learning to drive on the car (boy is he going to be spoiled). I drive these cars hard and enjoy them alot. The parts are expensive, but they are WAY more reliable and cheaper to operate than the BMW and Mercedes I have owned. Keep up with the oil changes and other maintenance and these cars will provide years of enjoyment without falling off of the depreciation cliff like my AMG did. Mark

POST 14Original post

Purchased my 2002 cab with just over 107k on the ODO. I have put about 1000 miles on it in the couple months I have owned it.. There are claims the IMS bearing was done on the car by the guy my seller bought it from. I cannot find the VIN registered in the IMS database so I take the statement with a grain of salt. Previous owner had it 8 years and gave me every receipt he had done on it and none of it was major. I'm going to do a water pump over the winter and all my upgrades have been minor DIY and/or cosmetic (fixed HVAC LCD, Ben's short shifter, factory cell phone delete, detailing). I had it checked out by an indy. Coolant temps are steady and perfect, no misfires, no major codes (aside from the soft top mechanism being rendered partiallly manual and having a fault) and get this - both banks of camshaft deviation were 0.0.

Just hit 138k the other day 99 C2 6 speed. Arctic over black. only real options are power seats, driver memory, draped leather and aluminum look gauges Original IMS Clutch done at 100k, AOS shortly before then. Came with a binder full of records Lived in Connecticut, NYC and now Massachusetts. Bought it in May of '19, it was cheapest manual coupe around. Only mods I've done are an eBay short shifter, it had the TechArt front bumper add ons, skirts and spoiler when I bought it. De-modded crappy aftermarket radio in favor for a CDR220(for now) I love the analog experience.

'99 C2 118K Miles. Black on Black. Minimally optioned but has the LSD. Originally sold in Michigan then made it's way to Ohio where I bought it from the PO. Currently resides in Cincinnati. Purchased 7 years ago with 80K miles for $15K. Immediately replaced RMS/IMS/AOS/Clutch/Flywheel and rear struts. @90K I replaced water pump, plugs, tubes and ignition coils. Late Fall every year change oil/filter (has the spin on oil filter adapter) with DT40 and put away for the winter after about 5K miles per year. Except for the rear struts replaced at 80K still has the original suspension. Creaks over curbs and needs to be replaced.

As a new potential owner searching for the right car, I love this thread. It's definitely easy to be scared away by the many modes of failure but at the end of the day it's still a smaller percentage when compared to many happy owners. I'm at least still here and searching. Without any intent to derail this thread, those that had their cars for a while now with higher miles, I'm wondering what your take is on the bore scoring issue? IMS/RMS doesn't scare me any more as if it was going to break it would have by now and many have replaced it as a safe measure. Bore scoring is a bigger issue that could turn into a $20k problem. What's everyone's take? A) OCD / proactive and does a DIY pan drop / bore scope once a year + quality oil changes B) Drive it hard and if it brakes do a rebuid. C) Drive it till the motor goes and then move on.

POST 27Original post

I have a 99 cab in blue with Savannah beige interior metropol blue carpet..duel row, lsd. i have had it 2 years now and it makes me smile each time I take it out. odometer reads 104,000 miles. The previous owner turns out gave me sketchy and maybe fake service documents, caused me major panic about a year ago. But as some said, just enjoy it and drive it. I have. It is due due for an engine out service to give me additional piece of mind and allows me to actually document the work done Incase I decide to sell it down the line.

It is mostly for peace of mind and for accurate record keeping. the AOS has not been done. It is a dual row IMS but might as well. New clutch. There was a bit of metal in an oil change, it’s when I realized the previous owners records were sketchy. Rona threw everything for a loop or I would have done it sooner. But I am just enjoying it. Bought it for $14k sight unseen and w/o maintenance docs or a PPI as a likely project but I've been driving it for the past 2.5 years with just basic maintenance and fun but unnecessary changes (wheels, exhaust, lowering springs & shocks etc). As far as I can tell, original clutch, IMS, AOS, RMS. Water pump looks newer. I just replaced all of the suspension links for a fun COVID-project and was surprised at how well the rubber has held up after 22 years. The pinion bearing in the trans is making the infamous noise so that's likely going to trigger some more intensive maintenance soon...luckily I live just down the road from Gbox. Just drive it!

188,728 miles, 1999 C4, MT, Silver over Black, nothing special except to me...I am the 4th owner, purchased in January of 2017, daily driver, I have replaced a bunch of parts 'cause I like wrenching on the engine and I had no history when purchased so have just been working my way through...water pump, thermostat, tensioner pulley, first the regulator then the whole damn alternator, AOS (with the ultimate), coolant reservoir, fuel injectors, coils, plugs, blah blah blah. I subscribe to the notion that these engines like to run in the higher RPM's so keeping it below 3k until warm and then I am cruising a 4k min. I change my oil every 4K miles. I LOVE THIS CAR.

911user is up to 430,000 miles already. Amazing.

I remember cars from the 70s when 100k miles was something you hoped for but rarely made it.

POST 46Original post

I’m interested in having 257 miles remaining on just over half a tank of gas my car indicates only about 320 miles range on a full tank. you must drive a lot of highway miles or you only drive downhill 😀

When I fill up, it shows just a tad above 3/4. When the indicator is at half, Ive got at least 2/3s left of the tank. And on the highway, 250miles on 2/3s is easily doable.

He typically sees 400+ - 450 miles out of a tank on a highway run.

WOW, that's seriously impressive! How strong does the engine feel compared to your 33,000 mile 996?

good for you! so many people get so uptight about buying a car with PPI, very careful inspection, all records, etc etc. Glad to see there are some people willing to take a risk. I'd submit that high mileage should be redefined as >150K. Too many cars out there have 100-150K.

Well, I haven't driven the car since around the 350,000 mark. But it was strong and solid back then. It felt great and still does. A few extra suspension creaks but the engine doesn't miss a beat. The car feels like one with 1/4 of the miles except for the sandblasted front end but thats just character, haha.

Just picked this up. Only 2 owners and a lot of history with maintenance, usually at Porsche dealers. Needs a water pump. The other is a 1990 928 S4 that I will be changing timing belt, and all rubber on suspension. Love to do the work on them.....and of course drive them !
