I'm getting 4 new nuts and bolts for the muffler to cats clamp, but is it recommended in using brand new ones for any other bits or parts?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey Guys, I'm in the middle of removing my mufflers from my 1999 996 and so far so good - I've been able to spray some Trick Shot on the bolts and everything has come off without any issues - no broken bolts etc (1 side done). I'm getting 4 new nuts and bolts for the muffler to cats clamp, but is it recommended in using brand new ones for any other bits or parts? The muffler tip to muffler clamps are going to be new as well. For the 3 bolts/nuts on the muffler brackets - should I have these sit in vinegar for a few days while I wait for the new mufflers to get in? They're in pretty good shape with a little surface rust, but surprised they're in this good of shape. I'm planning to reuse these for the new ones, but not sure if I should be doing anything to prep for longevity etc. Once I put the new mufflers on should I stick some of this Trick Shot penetrating oil on them to keep them lubed up and such or just rinse and clean them up? thanks Jason

POST 2Original post

All of those are good ideas. I didn't get new nuts for the muffler brackets and recently had trouble with one of them. Get stainless steel nuts and bolts for the cats. You're going to love the Fisters.

POST 3Original post

I got my carriage bolts for the clamps at the local Home Depot for a few $$. They fit perfectly into the rectangle holes.

POST 4Original post

Do as much as possible (everything if at all possible) in stainless steel and use plenty of copper based (high heat) anti-seize...you'll thank yourself next time you have to remove anything!

POST 5Original post

you may be able to source some of the parts from Fastenal, if you have one local beware of the bolt assembly that holds the tips on, they snap easy and sourcing another is no joy else, this kit covers it all http://www.carnewal.com/products/996...t-Hardware-Set

POST 6Original post

I would just replace whatever you are taking off even if it looks okay. Most of my hardware came off with a bit of force. My tip clamps were completely trashed and one I just twisted around until it was broken enough to get off.

POST 7Original post

Replace everything. You'll be removing those mufflers often in the future.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, yea I bought the full hardware kit from Fister so I have all of that, what Im wondering is if I should soak all of the bolts for the stuff I am keeping in vinegar..I read somewhere that cleans them up but wasnt sure if any downside. i got everything off the passenger side today after work but of course it always comes down to the last one. Worked on that damn thing for 45 mins but still wont budge. Soaking it in more trick shot over night and giving it a go tomorrow...hope this thing comes off without needing a torch, its the bottom Nut on the back of the muffler bracket attached to the car, damn this space is tight! speaking of the tips - these seem to be like rusted /seized on to the muffer connection, I was able to unscrew the clips but they just sit there..do I need to hammer these off or something? i really hope I dont need to take these off in the future, hoping to not have to do this again 🤣

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

F Me! I got the last bolt off but it broke, so the damn bolt is stuck on the muffler bracket and doesnt seem like theres any way to get it out. I tried to hammer it out but its not budging, this is the bottom bolt of the 3. Looks like I can get one off eBay but theyre not cheap, anyone know where I can pick one up otherwise? Part# 996.111.228.01 passenger side. as far as the nuts, anyone know what size these are or where to get them? I figure Ill get 6 new ones and new ones for the the two sides of the muffler bracket that attaches to the muffler. thanks Jason

POST 10Original post

Snap-On tools helps too ! "There really is a difference!"

POST 11Original post

You can try drilling it out, probably not too bad since the piece is off the car.

POST 12Original post

you can source the parts from Fastenal there's one on Stamford, CT about 22 miles the M8 x 70 and the M8 x 140 + the nuts = M8 also the M8 nuts http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=202-00

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank's Fracture - I was able to just order everything from http://www.dcauto.com/ - they only wanted $45 for the bracket! great prices damn

excellent, looks like that support bracket is $ 559.xx at Auto Atlanta

I was shocked when I saw the price of the bracket. I had the head snap off the stud on one of mine or maybe it rounded or something. Whatever happened I couldn't get a nut back on there. I figured it was no big deal, I will just order one. Nope, $500 dollars so the passenger side is held on by 2/3 of the bolts but the stud is still there. It's like that bracket is $500 but I can get a whole new convertible top for $750.

POST 16Original post

Just drill out the broken bolt and install another one. That's what I did.
