Suggestion

Funny I was thinking the same yesterday that you may be able to repair it (e.g., using JB weld) as opposed to replacing it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello again. This is (I think) my first post here although I have read plenty helpful stuff. You guys seem to be more inclined to do your own work than most UK owners. My 996 (C4 2001 3.4) has been running for a couple of months since I had the engine out and in again. I've been having a little issue with (I think) an inlet or vacuum leak. Nothing obvious and I had looked a few times but it's pretty packed in there and I coldn't find a thing. Giving codes 1128 and 1130 - which I reset every so often and an erratic tickover - rising up to 1500 rpm at times. Not nice. When I had the engine out I renewed all the inlet gaskets and fitted a new air oil separator (AOS). Eventually going to bite the bullet and get it sorted. I had an offer from a local garage (Lotus main dealer) to do a smoke test - which had been suggested a while back too. However - no patience and prefer to do things myself I made my own smoke machine from a disco fog machine after looking at lots of DIY options on youtube. Anyhow I ran it through the inlet system today and the only smoke I could see was (quite a lot) from the AOS. NOt from where the hoses go though but from another part - see photo. I can't find any info - should it come out there or should that part be sealed? The AOS was a pattern one (from a reputable UK dealer) - is it faulty? any experience anyone? Or ideas? I'm part-way through taking the engine out again so I can see better - it is a really hard to get at part!! Thanks Graham

POST 2Original post

Im in the process of replacing my AOS so I have the new part in my hand. That area you point to should be sealed so you need a new AOS for sure. That area is sealed by a plastic plug. Plastic to plastic welding.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's exactly what I needed to know Ahsai. My AOS feels like (I can't see that part yet) it is a hollow tube there - maybe it was supposed to be sealed further into the tube and it's failed? I will buy (another) new AOS then. Not the easiest job to fit though but I'm half-way through dropping the engine anyway so I will take it out, get a new AOS, fit it and reinstall. If I say it quickly it sounds simple!! I am very grateful for your help - this issue has been troubling me since I got the car back together and was really spoiling the driving experience. If you want to see I had my engine drop and reinstall writen up on the UK site http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=954...er=asc&start=0 I will be so happy if this fixes it!! thanks again

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I managed to get enough access - engine lowered a bit - to plug the opening with a plastic plug I had in the garage. Glued into place and reassemble everything. Test run went well but I will give it a couple of days to be sure. Hopefully this is my car back running properly again! thanks for the help

All right! Funny I was thinking the same yesterday that you may be able to repair it (e.g., using JB weld) as opposed to replacing it. Just make sure your plug can't fall inside the AOS
