I checked for an metallic look to it the day I boght it but never checked the level.
Leading evidence: 'Check metallic look' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'chevy dealer' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check metallic look' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Also the oil filter housing was leaking and damaged due to what looks to be channel locks being used on the housing.

I suspect the Chevy dealer that took it in originally is probably the one that overfilled the oil and damaged the housing since the car has an extensive history at porschr service centers up until that point which is also the reason I bought the car.

Otherwise, its likely a cracked head which is not good.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Pulled into work a bit early and while waiting in the car for the shop to open I started the car back up to get some heat only to see this cloud of white smoke go past me. Shut it down and waited a bit and tried again same smoke out of both tail pipes ( tried to see if it had a sweet smell but really couldn't tell) lasting for at least 30 seconds and went away mostly but still smoked a small bit. Checked the oil and no intermix I could see. Coolant reservoir was empty (could have been that way prior but not sure) but clean no sludge I could see. Oil fill cap did have some oil/water sludge in the end of the tube and underside of the cap from what I've heard can be normal. Started it and Check for heavy vacuum At the cap and definitely had a sucking but nothing crazy and the idle didn't stumble that I noticed when I pulled the cap off. Opinions? Aos or cracked head? No cel lights or anything. Cars at the shop now. Hoping to find out tomorrow. Btw it's an 2002 996 C4 3.6L 6 speed. I also noticed a heavy burning plastic smell the last few days but all my 996's seem to have a sort of smell like that. Just seemed a bit worse last few days. Now I normally leave in the dark in the morning and it's dark when I get home. Not sure if it may have been smoking the last day or two but not sure. Fingers crossed it's an AOS!
I'll bet its the aos. With a new one, the vacuum is almost imperceptible. Its there, but nothing strong at all. And the idle should definitely be bad when you take the cap. Its good for you if its the aos, easy cheap fix. Otherwise, its likely a cracked head which is not good.
I'm hoping. Should know tomorrow. Im at 40-60 leaning towards the head being the issue. My last two 996's 99 and 00 were issue free and pushed very hard. Hoping this one will treat me as well and I will get good news.
Yea pretty much. Didn't notice much of s change in idle though when I removed the oil fill cap. Could hear vacuume though I would think you would always have some?
The car has two problems. Maybe.
If the smoking was indeed smoke -- oil smoke -- that's a sign the AOS is going bad. That it happened on a hot start and has appeared several times in a row is pretty conclusive the AOS is bad.
For extra confirmation, one test is to try to remove the engine oil filler cap with the engine idling. If you can unscrew it but can't remove the cap against the pressure difference, that's a good sign the AOS is bad.
However, a bad AOS may not result in enough pressure difference, so if you did this test and were able to remove the cap with no problem, that does not conclusively eliminate the AOS.
The low coolant is probably due to a bad cap, but there could be a bad coolant tank too.
And the AOS on the 996 has a coolant component and if the AOS is bad this can also result in a loss of coolant.
If there is no signs of oil in the coolant, and if you obtain a suitable sample of engine oil and have it analyzed and the report comes back with no anti-freeze compounds in the oil the head is ok.
Normally for a suspected bad cap or tank or other component leak I'd recommend a hot cooling system pressure test. This is done by topping up the coolant tank with distilled water and then starting the engine and driving the car around until the engine was fully up to operating temperature, then on the driveway raising RPMs to 1500 and holding until the radiator fans come on then turning off the engine. Then waiting.
The engine's heat load raises the coolant temperature and pressure and with everything hot if there is a crack in the tank or a bad cap or a leak somewhere else you'll know it soon enough.
However with the AOS (suspected) bad I'm not in favor of running the engine until the AOS is confirmed and replaced or eliminated as being bad.
If the AOS is deemed bad replace it and top up the coolant level then see if there is a coolant leak.
Well I heard back from the shop this morning. So far no coolant leaks with the pressure test were detected but the oil was found way over full. Also the oil filter housing was leaking and damaged due to what looks to be channel locks being used on the housing. I've only owned this pcar for only a few weeks so this this is the first time it's been a shop since I purchased it. It was traded in on a new corvette then that dealer wholesaled it to the small dealer I aquired it from. The dealer I purchased it from did zero work on it and sold it to me. I suspect the Chevy dealer that took it in originally is probably the one that overfilled the oil and damaged the housing since the car has an extensive history at porschr service centers up until that point which is also the reason I bought the car. This however doesn't mean that there aren't more issues' but that's what's been found as of now.

So, no PPI then? Playin' with fire! Hopefully you don't get burned...Good Luck.
Yea no ppi. I had two 996's prior to this that I drove extremely hard and never had any issues at all. I picked this one up for $15,500 with 90k miles an extensive service history and no accidents and rolled the dice. I also know the dealer I purchased it from has been around since the 90's and had a spotless reputation. But yea I really should have done a ppi. There are no excuses for not doing it really. Just find it odd that if the oil was over filled over the last two weeks I've driven her and it never smoked until now... But like I said they still may find more issues.
Verdict is in. Too much oil causing the smoke and leaking at the oil filter, a leak at a t-fitting for the coolant once it was warmed up and pressure tested again, Also bad ball joint and tires were worn unevenly due to alingment. Had the oil filter opened up and it's clean no metal. So the two leaks are getting repaired, new a-arm, 4 tires and an alignment, ims guardian and having a set of fabspeed bypass pipes put on (Yes loud I know had them before) and a b&m short throw shift. Dodged the bullet on this one!
I'm just gonna throw this out there that when I buy a car a check of the dip stick is a must. That would have told you if you had too much oil in it. No criticism, just sayin.
If you suspect the Chevy dealer did an oil service it probably used the wrong oil. If I were you I have another oil service done and be sure the right oil is used and of course not overfilled.
