Then, move to the front seatbelt if you look eye level with the plastic trim piece surrounding where the seatbelt goes behind the panel, youll see a Philips head screw using a magnetic screwdriver, remove this screw.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Im sure there are probably other ways you can route the wire, but this is the way I chose and it worked out pretty well.
As I set about installing an IMS Guardian I had a hard time finding specifics on where to pass the cable through the body to the engine on a coupe; I found plenty of information on where to pass the cable on a 986 or on a 996 cab, and vague written descriptions, but nothing specific. So, hopefully this writeup will be helpful to folks in the future.
The biggest takeaway this is infinitely easier using a set of trim removal tools. I want to say my set was purchased for $4 at Harbor Freight. You dont need anything fancy, but dont break out the screwdrivers or use your hands youll cut/scratch the leather or break some clips. Throughout the whole process of this DIY and another one Ill post soon, I didnt break a single clip or scuff a single piece of leather and I can be pretty clumsy. Youll also need a set of Torx bits or screwdrivers, as well as standard tools.
Step 1:
Remove center console. This is probably optional in terms of just removing the rear carpet, but I did a fair number of other mods to the car while I was in there that required center console removal. Plenty of threads on removing the console, but the short version is that there are 5 screws you need to remove (3 in the storage bin, 1 under the ash tray, one under the shift boot)

Step 2:
Remove the rear seats, seat backs and rear seatbelt hardware. Also fairly well documented in other threads, and fairly intuitive.
Step 3:
Remove subwoofer (if applicable). I have a Bose car so this had to get pulled out, but its super easy.
Pull the two Bose covers of using a trim tool, and remove the bolt underneath the port that youve now exposed (one on each side). Now pull the subwoofer forward, and disconnect the plug at the back right of the subwoofer and remove the sub from the car.

Step 4:
Remove the rear panels. Theres a couple of steps here and I only got pictures of two.
First, climb in the back seat and using your trim tools, pop out the plastic trim surrounding the rear seatbelt. Then, move to the front seatbelt if you look eye level with the plastic trim piece surrounding where the seatbelt goes behind the panel, youll see a Philips head screw using a magnetic screwdriver, remove this screw. Ask me what happens if you DONT use a magnetic screwdriver, and drop the screw into the panel.
Next, remove the speakers by removing the two bolts holding them in; once you pull the speakers out, disconnect the wire on the back. Then, remove the post that the rear seats latch on to using a Torx bit or a 6mm allen key.

Once you have all these parts removed, you can begin to pull the panel away from the side of the car. Start from the rear, use a wide trim tool until you hear the clips pop away.
As you get to the front of the car, you may need to pull away the rubber seal along the edge of the door. Dont worry it just pulls right off and slides right back on.
Step 5:
The hard part is over. Now its time to start pulling carpeting panels away. Start with the panel that covers the ECU. If youve ever had any suspension work done before, you likely already have carpeting that has been cut to access the shock towers. Either way, with a bit of leverage using trim tools and a bit of grunting, the pieces pull right out.

Step 6:
Now, remove the main rear seat carpeting piece. Its one giant chunk of carpet. I started at the edges using a narrow trim tool to get in between carpeting pieces and pull the rear seat carpet up from under the seams. Then once I had the sides free, I moved to the bottoms and then on to the tunnel section. Once everything is free, the piece lifts out quite easily.

Step 7:
You now have access to the rear port that I used to run the IMS Guardian to the oil pan. Im sure there are probably other ways you can route the wire, but this is the way I chose and it worked out pretty well.
The port is shown circles in yellow, and the second picture shows the IMS guardian wire routed and hanging loosely over the center tunnel. I punched a small hole in the rubber firewall gasket, and then used a razor to slice through to that hole.

And there you have it! Installation is basically the reverse of removal. Make sure you dont drop the screws trying to put the side panels back in place!
