Its from 2015, so it's always possible the blend has changed over time.

FWIW, my first Motul XS 5W-40 UOA looked very similar to yours, albeit slightly more wear, probably because I run 5K mile oil change intervals.

I will follow your recommendation anyway and do an oil change before next winter storage but I can see the moisture level was correct for this sample and it tells me that the engine was in good health for 1235 miles.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
Today I received the used oil analysis results for my 02' C4S.
I was wondering if the numbers seems good?
They look correct from what I know: Iron, Copper, aluminum and silicon levels are low and there's not much fuel present.
What I want to confirm is that all the other numbers are ok and if all the datas look ok if you keep in mind the oil mileage:
1235 miles
Thanks
Hugo
Hard to say with so few miles on the oil, plus the real value in UOAs is in the trend, not the individual report. With that said, Al, Fe, Si and fuel all look good in this initial report. How many miles on the engine?
Hi
The engine now have 93510 miles and still run strong.
I must admit I dont use all my RPM's but I sometimes go past 6000.
I will have my second report in October.
Hard to tell how the anti-wear did without knowing what the virgin oil looks like.
Thats more important than the wear metals.
Consider sending a virgin sample if you can’t find one online.
Definitely get a trend started so you know when it looks off.
Good idea
I will send a sample at the same time I send my next oil change.
Whats great is that my UOA are free...
The company I work for send UOA each week so I just ship my sample at the same time
Even there I guess something like Motul X-cess 5w-40 should be available on the web, I will try to find it online.
You can’t judge anything based from one sample, especially one with such few miles. UOA is all about trend data, and keeping the same run time on each sample, while making sure you don’t swap oils, throw additives at the engine, and etc.
People want to see magical results from just one UOA, and that isn’t going to happen.
Thanks Jake,
I know that the trend is more important then a single sample.
But what it tell me is that the "blood test" was good at that time and for that many miles. Its like a human I guess.. its not because your blood test was good a couple weeks ago that you are actually in good health but it can tell you if something goes wrong in between the tests.
For sure the next oil change will have more miles.
Its important to know that this sample was my storage oil so I used it for few miles and the oil stayed in the engine for about 6 months.
I will follow your recommendation anyway and do an oil change before next winter storage but I can see the moisture level was correct for this sample and it tells me that the engine was in good health for 1235 miles.
BTW, if you can see a VOA of Motul X-cess 8100 5W-40 on BITOG. Its from 2015, so it's always possible the blend has changed over time.

Remember, the UOA is about a whole lot more than just wear metal counts. In these threads I see all the emphasis on wear metals, and people are overlooking all the important stuff. I look at wear metals last. Seeing how the additive package is holding up, how the viscosity is being retained, and watching for oxidation are all important. If I see perfect wear metals, and I see the other warning signs, I automatically become mega concerned.
A very revealing video has been edited the last couple of weeks. This video is direct experience with one of my 10 year old Aircooled engines that failed. The owner completed 15 oil changes, and retained samples of all then- yet he never had them processed. After I found out what happened during. tear down, he then told me that he had the samples... He didn't just have the samples, but he also had the mileage, the type of oil, and all other pertinent data for each sample. Once we processed these, they were broken down into chronological order, then the wear per 100 miles, among other things were calculated.
What was most revealing was how the last 3-4 samples of the engine's oil showed LESS wear metals than the earlier samples did. With those, the other portions of the UOA continued to show an engine that was in big trouble- yet showed zero symptoms as the owner unknowingly drove it to death.
If one looks at the wear metals from those last 3-4 samples, they'd never suspect that the engine had an issue. When we release this video, people will change the way they look at UOA.
Hi everyone,
I would like to continue this old thread, showing my UOA each and every time I change the oil.
Who knows maybe one day it will be useful...
So in the mean time I leave this here for discussion, sharing knowledge and so on.
I dont want to bother you guys with this type of information but I tried to follow Jake's recommandation about the differents aspects of UOA.
Getting a trend is important for sure but understanding the results is for me a very important point.
In order a VOA for Motul 5w40 X-cess from 2017:
2019 UOA
2020 UOA
Here's the infos provided with the lastest UOA:
Sample date: June 6th 2020
Oil changed after sample
Porsche 911 996 C4S 2002
M96 engine 6cyl. Gas
Engine total oil capacity is approx. 12.5L
Oil reservoir capacity including filter: 8.75L
Oil used: Motul 5w40 X-Cess 8100
Engine Km: 151633
Kms on oil: 2357
Oil added between change: 400ml
Additive added: No
Oil filter type: Wix Paper filter cartridge
Rating: 28 Microns
This UOA follows the recent trend. Once again not much milage (kms) on the oil but that's basicly the time I got to have fun with the car.
No major change in viscosity at 100 but I dont like the increase of nitration and sulfation, with a 3rd sample next year Ill be able to figure if this is part of the trend
My test for next sample is to see if my recent change to a low temp. thermostat unit. will change Sulfation result as it take a little bit more time to get it up to operating temp...
The oxidation have decreased by a little while there is still anti-oxidant package present in good numbers.
The one thing I dont really understand is the Silicon.. In the VOA Silicon is present (For a reason I dont really understand as Im not a chemist), but Im wondering what would be the reading for silicon if for example you would remove the air filter for 100 kms +?
I guess you would see higher Silicon reading plus more metal wear due to dirt which will lead you to a possible vacuum leak/problem with filter?
Knowing that my coolant is Silicon free (Pentosin SF) I would eliminate the theory of a mix, and if it was just part of a silicon gasket it would'nt increase the metal wear right?
I also have a question about oil filter.. As you can see Im using a Wix filter rated at 28 Microns.
Would it be a good idea to use a filter with a lower micron rating? What rating before disturbing the flow?
So far I always used this type of paper cartridge filter but Im planning to switch to a regular screw on filter using LN engineering adapter.
Would I be able to see the results on a UOA, with less Iron and other ferrous material in it if for example I use a magnetic strip on the filter to catch more particles?
This would'nt mean less wear but atleast less particles travelling in the engine?
Thanks
Hugo
Hugo, I've found that silicon tends to show up in the VOAs for Motul XS 5W40 at low concentrations. I actually researched a lot of Motul UOAs and VOAs before I switched to it last year (previously running Mobil 1 0W40 for a few years). My understanding is that the main issue with silicon on M96/M97 engines is that it can be a leading indicator of bore scoring since that is the material that coats the walls of these engines. I've seen a few UOAs on failed M96 engines that showed a classic trend of silicon increase (I mean noticeable, well into the double digits) followed by aluminum. I wanted to get a good understading of the background silicon concentraion in Motul so I could know how to spot what might be coming from the engine vs. what is just naturally in the oil. I've seen VOAs for Motul with anywhere from 3 to 6 ppm silicon, so as long as silicon your UOA is showing mid or even high single digits, there's probably very little coming from your engine and most of that was in the oil to begin with.
On a related note, one interesting observation and concern I have with Motul, even though I've been using it the past two oil changes, is the lack of Molybdenum. Its non-existent in Motul, whereas its present in low concentrations in the Mobil 1. I think of Molybdenum as being a good dry-film lubricant which would be important for start-up protection on engines that have a reputation for bore scoring. However, based on Motul's reputation I just had to assume they have other properties/additives in their oil that are providing good protection at start-up.
FWIW, my first Motul XS 5W-40 UOA looked very similar to yours, albeit slightly more wear, probably because I run 5K mile oil change intervals. There was also undoubtedly a little Mobil 1 left in the engine so I'll know more on my next UOA,
Hi!
Yes you are right, I was under the impression that a high silicon reading could be an vacuum leak, poor air filter fitment and so on as silicon
dioxide and particularly silicates is present in dust, atmosphere ect.
For this particular application I think silicon is used as an anti-foaming agent (dont take my words on this...)
You are also right on the fact that Motul X-cess doesnt have alot of Molybednum present but there is different types of Moly.
The anti-wear package that I can identify are Zinc, Phosphorus ,Boron and MoDTC.
I read somewhere that Molybednum (
MoS2) is not used much in today oil formula because its not soluble in oil.
Today's formula use MoDTC an oil soluble Moly but when you see VOA or UOA with 700+ppm you can be sure they dont use the later type Moly as its will shows in lower concentration.
The bottom line seems to be the performance of the blended product and so far Motul X-cess seems to be a good choice.
