Only problem is finding the bushes for the electric motor.

Anyway the upshot is that I just cleaned the whole thing and put it back in as is.

Sometimes the brushes are soldered on to the cage and you need to replace the cage as a unit that the shop will also carry.

I know I can replace the whole starter but I would like to just recondition the one I have.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all,
Quick one this.... I need to find some replacement bushes for my starter as its a bit worn. I know I can replace the whole starter but I would like to just recondition the one I have. Only problem is finding the bushes for the electric motor. Does anyone have any ideas on where I can get them?
If not that, do you know who made the motors originally... Bosch?
thanks all
I buy mine at a local Alternator/Starter rebuild shop. Haven't done the 996 yet, but the parts were in teh book and fit a tone of stuff for my Old 69/911 years ago.
Thats what Im thinking but I cant find one near me. Need to spend more time Googling since were currently all stuck inside.
Thanks Bill. I have been looking at new but would rather recon the one I have if possible. It really only needs bushes and a clean up and re-grease.
I've even in a pinch taken the old brushes to an electrical motor re builder, found a set of brushes that are physically bigger but have the same pigtail on them, filed the brushes down to fit. (They cut VERY easy with a basic metal file... Or sand paper. the carbon is actually fairly soft.
This or your previous suggestion of going to the local starter/ alternator shop to get the parts. Sometimes the brushes are soldered on to the cage and you need to replace the cage as a unit that the shop will also carry. I've done both ways for many cars over the years.
Thanks for your replies all.
I'll keep searching for somewhere that can do this for me. Might widen the search to the whole UK as I could just post the old ones to be copied by someone.
Ok so an update here for anyone else reading (as personally I hate it when someone posts a question that I also want to know the answer to and then doesn’t follow up the solution)...
I've purchased a complete holder with new brushes in from eBay in the end. turns out it”s much easier to find the holder complete. Took some work to track down the right part and I will report back if it fits as I’m going by eye only due to not being able to find the correct part code for the holder on the original Bosch starter.
Thanks for coming back to post. I figured it would be more time or money doing this incrementally than just buying a more complete solution.
I still dont understand why 100 quid is too much to just be done with it?
Because it is always better to fix an OE part then to install some cheap Chinese starter. Especially now. Do you really want to send your money to a Chinese company after what that country's political party did to the planet by lying and hiding things until it was too late?
Indeed I could get a new starter for 150 but I would rather keep the original and really don't mind doing the work myself. Plus at the moment we have time.
Stripped and rebuilt the motor today. Sanded and painted the outside. Just waiting for that to harden and then it will all go back together and back in this weekend. I'll upload some photos when done.
Generally speaking Chinese starters are really bad. Most of the re-builders won't even try to re-build them. "throw it away and buy another" they say "that's why you bought that cheap piece of crap in the first place" ('cause it was cheap)...
Update here.
I failed to find the correct brushes and holder.
Despite 4 attempts and people saying they sent me the correct brush holder setup, it never fitted, they were always too large to fit into the outer casing by 2-5mm in diameter. To the point where they told me I must have a different starter than stock... but it has the correct Porsche markings on it so I doubt it.
Anyway the upshot is that I just cleaned the whole thing and put it back in as is. I have about 55% of the existing brushes left so they should be ok for a while yet.
Now I've lubricated it all it's working much better, starts faster and doesn't have that annoying overrun squeak anymore.
