Up to that point, I had replaced the Idle control valve, (had a crack in the body and a torn gasket) disassembled, cleaned and lubed the throttle pedal box (not recommended) disassembled and cleaned the cable junction sleeve under the car, repeatedly tested the front and rear cables to make sure they were not hung up, cleaned the throttle body.
Leading evidence: 'back' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'back' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean cable junction sleeve' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

My car finally popped a CEL, as I mentioned in an earlier post, and it was the MAS.

I've replaced coils and plugs (my coils were cracked), MAF (this failed right after my coil and plug replacement), IAC gasket, and cleaned my IAC yet I still face the issue.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I was at the point of giving up and taking it to a pro, but for the cost of a smoke test I can own the smoke test machine, and probably still the parts required to repair it as well.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After multiple weeks of chasing down the cause of my '99 c2's idle issues, the car finally saved my sanity with a check engine light. Air mass sensor ....I disconnected it, ran in default mode for a while, and there was no problem. Replaced it yesterday, and now have a fine running motor.
Perhaps the car running rich should have been a hint. In any case, looking forward to a fine weekend of driving. Thanks to all who offered assistance chasing down the problem!
Have you had the car tested with a manometer? I wonder if this could somehow be related to your AOS? I'm fighting the same issue (sticky revs at 2200 RPM) on my '99. I've replaced coils and plugs (my coils were cracked), MAF (this failed right after my coil and plug replacement), IAC gasket, and cleaned my IAC yet I still face the issue. In my case the revs don't "stick" if the IAC is unplugged but this doesn't necessarily point at the idle controller itself since it's computer controlled. There really can be any number of factors telling the computer to crack the valve and keep the revs at 2200 but I haven't found the cause yet.
Wiggle Puppy - we are brothers from other mothers!. My car is also now stuck at 2200 rpm. I can drive down the highway with my foot off the gas, and stay at a steady speed! My car finally popped a CEL, as I mentioned in an earlier post, and it was the MAS. After unplugging the MAS, it ran clean. So I replaced it for $300 and the problem is back. My understanding is that to test if the AOS is failing, unscrew the oil filler cap as engine runs. If it is very difficult to remove, the AOS is failing. I don't have that problem.
I replaced my IAC, thought that was the problem because it was cracked. No luck. Did you do the plugs and coil packs as an attempted remedy for this problem, or was that unrelated to the idle issue?
I have now ordered a smoke machine to look for vacuum leaks. I was at the point of giving up and taking it to a pro, but for the cost of a smoke test I can own the smoke test machine, and probably still the parts required to repair it as well.
Thats not how u test an aos. U need a manometer and a modified oil cap. Skip, porschetech, sells one. There r many threads on how to test. Also unplugging a maf is not telling u anything. U need to hook a scanner on that can read its values at idle and under load. I wouldnt spend a single dollar more in parts until u can actually diagnose the engine.
If u want a small project u can look up "how to make a slack tube" and make an old school analog manometer for $5 or buy one from amazon gor $30. Tools r good to own
. Im betting a good scanner is also under $100, but understanding the numbers or even knowing what the numbers suppose to be is the hard part.
This is the EXACT same crap I'm dealing with. Unfortunately I bought into the mystique of the '99 which seems to be the only year that suffers this problem due to the unique throttle setup.
My plugs and coils were unrelated to the idle issue. My car began misfiring badly during my first drive in the rain after I bought it. Most of my coils were cracked so I replaced them with the updated 997 parts. One or two drives later my mass air flow sensor died (my car threw a CEL like yours). I replaced this with an OEM part and also replaced the idle controller gasket since I tore it while removing the idle air controller (I thought that was the MAF...)
I'll likely bring the car to a shop this fall for a quick once over and see if they can figure it out. I'm looking for someone local with a smoke machine as vacuum leaks are my next guess.
