Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My oil gauge has always read 3 ticks from the top except for the first check after the oil change, no more and less except for today.

I've seen other posts that suggest just using the gauge as a general indicator but always check the dipstick for a more accurate determination.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hop in the car to run some errands, as always I let the oil level gauge cycle and then start the car. Drove into town, ran an errand, and then headed up the road 15 minutes to fill up on gas. I noticed when I got back in the car after filling up and pulled away the oil gauge was stuck on and reading 1 tick from the bottom and I would assume that is bad news. Pullover a few hundred yards down the road and turn the car off, pull the dipstick out which looks okay but I didn't have anything to do a wipe down with. Get back in and the gauge is reading almost where it normally is. I get home and let the car sit for 15 minutes and run a check of both the cluster and dipstick, wait another 15 do another test. Stick looks okay to me, reading right at the max line. My oil gauge has always read 3 ticks from the top except for the first check after the oil change, no more and less except for today. Oil looks clean. I generally check my oil every 2 weeks or so and it always looks the same to me so this caught me off guard.
Dipstick after 30 minutes of sitting.
I tried to gently lay the dipstick on the towel to leave an imprint of the oil level.
I've seen other posts that suggest just using the gauge as a general indicator but always check the dipstick for a more accurate determination. I do both but it scared the **** out of me to see I had 'no oil' when it appears I have plenty of it.
It's a flat 6... It takes quite a while for all the oil in the heads to drain back down to the sump. Your gauge is probably fine - it's actually accurately showing how much oil is in the sump...
In my experience the oil level sensor is reliable if youre consistent in reading it (warm but off for 10-30 minutes; flat and level front to back and side to side). But if it hasnt sat long and is warm, or is completely cold, or the car is slightly off level; then the dash gauge can be imperfect.
Also the top of the gauge is full and the bottom isnt empty its one quart(which I think is still technically acceptable) low; so something like 9 quarts to the top of the gauge and 8 to the bottom.
It really doesn’t need one.
One qt low on the dipstick it still 1 qt low, it’s just that you have 2qts more than the factory.
If you’re going to be on the track, you want to be at the same point on the dipstick to protect your AOS and prevent smoking.
If you’re just street driving, you have 2 qts extra just because.
LN advises for track cars to run min level cold.
"Vehicles operated at extended high speeds or sustained high rpms as experienced with high performance driving events should run the minimum oil level measured cold and havingbeen stored flat for a minimum of 8 hours."
If you follow that practice - factory dip stick will not show oil level until enough oil has drained back to the sump and your actual level be a mystery. If you add as a result - by the time the oil drains back to the sump, it is likely you will be above their recommended level.
Just seems like a small thing to have a properly calibrated dip stick in conjunction with the kit as the information it gives is critical to health and longevity of the motor and AOS.
Checked this morning after sitting overnight. Dipstick looks almost exactly the same, the gauge is reading one tick lower than it normally has since I did an oil change. What are the ideal conditions to check the level? Cold, warm? On/off?
My engine guy says: Check "overnight cold" on level ground. Start with oil at halfway mark. Add only when at low mark. Bring level only up to halfway mark.
I'm old fashioned and use the dipstick, but compare with the digital gauge as well.
If you run oil at the halfway point, its bound to show low after running it for a little bit. So your reading is normal, especially if the car isnt parked on a flat level surface.
