You were planning to do track, that was you said on your first post, and those were the numbers on the low, so this is my breakdown, oil change needs to be done every 3000 miles on this car if you're using JG XP3 $17 + filter if DIY you will spend around

Suggestion

Brake pads and sensors only front and back about $1500 with an indy mechanic if you do track at 8 runs per race, for safety you should change the pads after 3-4 days of track and the rotors after 12 and rotors are expensive so add another 1400 with an Indy mechanic.

let's pretend they are balance and you're the one who will mounted and using them also as daily tires because if you have another set which is days with proper alignment which can cost you 150 and up and you know you have to alter the camber for track days if you don't want to loose a set in 1 day.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Noticed, everyone is doing introductions, so, Ill do my introduction: I have mostly been a Honda person. I owned multiple iterations of Acura Integras. I wasnt one of the ricer owners. I autocrossed my Type R and then raced it one year in East Coast Honda Challenge. I have also owned multiple Miatas and S2000s. I have been track driving since 1998. My goals are to own most configurations of RWD vehicles. I have had lower horsepower front engined RWD (S2000, Miata) and would like to eventually own something mid-high horsepower and mid-engine one day (unfortunately, these kind of cars are usually exotics). So, that brings me to my new to me car: Rear engine RWD. I always wanted a 996 GT3, came really close to pulling the trigger on one about four years ago, but it was just too expensive when I really thought about it. Now, life is a little bit better, but I have a family so I was looking into regular 911. I thought about 964,993, 996, 997. But when factoring in initial cost, maintenance, fun factor, etc. The 996 won out except for the whole RMS/IMS issue. Remember, I come from Honda world where, I would run my race car HARD HARD HARD and really had no issues with it. Ran my track S2000 HARD HARD HARD and no issues at all. Change fluids, change brakes and GO! So, not to start a debate about whether 5% or 95% of 996 suffer from this, I was a little leary. Did some research and gave the most loved and the most hated man a call Jake Raby. Chatted him up a bit and he had a 2002 996 from an owner in Georgia that has the IMS failure but everything else on the car seemed ok. More chat, some pictures, cash exchanged hands and a year ago I purchased a 02 911. Since I am an instructor at local tracks and my car will see DEs, I went with his DE engine package. This all happened in 2013. Now a year later, I will be picking my car up from Raby at the end of this November. I was glad it took a year. It was enough time for me to save up, buy a house (now I have a three car garage so, no potential dings on the P-car), research car seats for the back for my son, and buy suspension (just purchased PSS10 and H&R sways). My goals with the car is to break it in over the winter, then install the suspension, Pagid Pads (or may choose another brand), Hankook RS3v2 tires and upgrade the radio. I will do no sound mods, because after owning loud track cars and streets car, I am done with noise. Also, no extra power mods. I have chased down and passed much more powerful cars in my S2000, Type R & Miata on the track. Dont need power, just need to learn how to drive the car fast. Who cares if people are faster than me on the street. The car will mainly be a weekend spirited drive or go out with family car and 10 times a year track car. Looking forward to actually driving it for the first time in a month! This site (and others) have been informative. Thanks for all of the posts.

POST 2Original post

Looks like you're going to have one sweet car and I'm sure it would've been worth the wait. Any details on your motor? FWIW, I've been a Honda guy in the past too. Just bought another CRX last year. I keep going back to it even though I have better cars, they are so damn fun. EG, EK, EF, DA, DC...

POST 3Original post

Congrats! Post up some pix when you get the car back from Raby.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here is a pic of me next to it, when I visited the car in person earlier this year: Frunk is slightly open and tow hook is in the frunk.

POST 5Original post

Congratulations and welcome I love my 996 but I just used as a weekend car when weather permits, I do autocross 8-10 times per year but not with the Porsche, I owned almost all german and japanese brands, the Porsche is a beauty but if you're thinking to used as a track car maintenance is going to be expensive as an autox driver you know tires are the price to pay and with the suspension mods some other components may need replacement sooner. I don't know how many miles you have but if I have to throw an estimate just using the car for autocross and weekends prepare to have 5K or more budget for maintenance per year.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When you say $5K a year in maintenance, detail that out. Are you saying... Oil changes: $500 for JB Oil + filter Brake Pads: $1000 Tires: $1000 (track days are much easier on tires than autocrossing. I can't stand autocrossing anymore) Transmission oil:$50 or so Because German: $2500 ?

POST 7Original post

^^^ Looks like a good break-down to me. Add: Broken cup holder: $750

POST 8Original post

Anyone know exactly what a Raby "DE Engine Package" consists of? I couldn't find any info on it.

POST 9Original post

Welcome to Rennlist. Sounds like you thought this purchase out pretty well. Soon you'll be driving your new C2 with your son in the back. You'll need to post more pics once you have possession of your Porsche.

POST 10Original post

You were planning to do track, that was you said on your first post, and those were the numbers on the low, so this is my breakdown, oil change needs to be done every 3000 miles on this car if you're using JG XP3 $17 + filter if DIY you will spend around $200 let's say you make 2 oil changes per year $400 Brake pads and sensors only front and back about $1500 with an indy mechanic if you do track at 8 runs per race, for safety you should change the pads after 3-4 days of track and the rotors after 12 and rotors are expensive so add another 1400 with an Indy mechanic. If you want to do well everywhere, you'll need sets of wheels and tires. One for dry track , one for wet track, and one for street driving. I doubt $1000 will cover the 3 sets let's pretend they are balance and you're the one who will mounted and using them also as daily tires because if you have another set which is days with proper alignment which can cost you 150 and up and you know you have to alter the camber for track days if you don't want to loose a set in 1 day. Transmission fluid $50??? for what for a Corolla? transmission fluid will cost you around $250 again with an Indy mechanic. Hopefully you're not getting into a little fender bender on a race which is like saying I'm going to learn how to walk and I'm not going to fall. There is your breakdown I quote you low and again I don't know how many miles you have, things break for old and use in a 12 year old car, without tracking, maintenance per year can easily reach 2500 or more. In this because of German car. Good luck!!

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your advice. I do most of all my own maintenance and installs. I don't race anymore and just do track days. I'll keep track of my costs and report back. Also, I have been driving on the track for about 16 years now, so I'll rely on some of that experience to help with this car.

Enjoy!! I certainly enjoyed testing it!

POST 15Original post

Congrats! Looking forward to hear about your thoughts on the motor.

POST 16Original post

Congrats! You will enjoy that car for a long time.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

First drive: Very smooth, nice torque delivery (I have the 3.8 Performer motor), still breaking it in so no redline runs. I didn't drive it stock, so I have no comparison to it previously. Looking forward to changing the brake pads in the near future to something with more initial bite (I already have pads sitting in my garage). Now the review of Raby Enterprises: A+ They walked me through this whole process. No drama. Everything and more done as expected. There is still support even after delivery. I have documentation of everything. EVERYTHING. Plain and simple, if you have a sick M96, have the time to wait and the funds, his shop is worth the look. Do your research, he is a hated and loved man, but my experience with him and his company has been great.
