So I repaired the flap using some 3M strip calk and Gorilla tape.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm in the middle of the heater flap repair. Here's a pic of my heater flap. It's amazing I felt any heat at all. My heat would get lukewarm but never hot. Trying to get it fixed since the wife complained last winter whenever we went anywhere in the 996....

POST 2Original post

Ahhh, Its a Porsche! No heat, no air conditioning, just P car power and excitement.. Leave the wife home!!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That foam stuff is supposed to cover all the holes. So when my heat is on, cold air is coming through the holes and mixing with the air coming from the heater core.

POST 5Original post

I've been seeing chunks fo that foam slowly coming through the vent. just a matter of time before I'm int he smae boat too. The dash needs to come out for this?

POST 6Original post

Yeah. That foam deteriorates and comes out of the vents. I have an new chunk of it on the floor every few weeks. I haven't taken mine apart, but I'd guess it looks the same. Is there a replacement foam?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dash does not need to come out. There is a DIY on Renntech about it. You have to basically do all the steps as if you were replacing the heater core. Then you have to dremel to get the door out. Seems scary but it was actually easy. I plan to use duct tape and caulk. I'll post a pic once I do it after Thanksgiving.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I repaired the flap using some 3M strip calk and Gorilla tape. See pictures below. Hopefully, someone will find this helpful.

POST 9Original post

It seems like all that tape and caulk will make the flap weigh much more, relatively speaking, than it did when new. And no air will pass through the tape where the foam perhaps allowed some air and/or pressure equalization. Is that going to hamper the proper operation of the flap?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's actually a very good point. I am following the DIY guide from RennTech.....I think I will go back and go a little easier on the caulk.

POST 11Original post

I'm curious why you are putting caulk on the edges at all?

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I saw the caulk used in the writeup on Renntech. From the factory, the foam extends past the metal so I think the caulk is used to enable the flap to make a nice seal. I use the term "seal" loosely since there is no way this actually seals pressure. I suppose I could have just extended the tape past the metal and folded it onto itself for the same effect.
