I had discussed the IMSB with them the week before, the mechanic did know of the issue, he changed the oil, they took pictures and emailed them to me, and kept the filter for me.

What a beautiful way to start, enjoy your car, nothing bits a road trip and that's the best test drive you can do, the only thing you have to do when you get home is camouflage the radar and that's it, the car looks in pristine condition same as the filter but I bet someone is going to tell you they see pieces of metal and is just the reflection of the fluorescent tube.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I will do this in a couple of posts, the first day has the most pictures. So I flew my high school friend out to Reno, NV on Friday, I had a meeting come up in Minnesota that I had to attend, so I flew in from Reno and arrived about 7 PM, he had gotten there by 4 PM. We stayed at the Peppermill casino. Went out and also went downtown to a couple other casino's, many drinks were drunk and at 2:30 AM we landed back in the room. Got a late start and Fred of Budget Motors of Reno picked us up at the Casino about 10 AM in a BMW 7 series. Budget Motors was just a mile or so away, and what do we have here? A 99 C4 with 31K miles! Fred is bringing it over to the lift so I can inspect it. They put it on a lift, which is out door, and let me take a look at the car. I had discussed the IMSB with them the week before, the mechanic did know of the issue, he changed the oil, they took pictures and emailed them to me, and kept the filter for me. They cut it open when I was there and nothing was found. That was my PPI. Let the flames begin! We did the paper work, we shot the **** for a good hour, and we were ready to leave. Oh, I also hooked up my aux input, brought the radio removal tools, disconnected the CD player and hooked up the aux input and cable, now we have iPod input for the rest of the trip. Fred, the owner, and Sandy, the sales person with myself. I felt like I was leaving family. It was just an awesome experience. Fred told us to drive up to Virginia City, which was about 25 minutes away, and old silver mining town. Such a good move! The winds were already howling, we did not know that these howling winds would follow us ALL THE WAY BACK TO CHICAGO. At this point I thought to myself "This car does not seem quick at all as compared to the other cars I have driven." A little later in the day I determined that Reno is at 4500 feet of elevation, and once the car was closer to sea level, all was good. Here is my co-pilot, Erik, a friend from high school. Man, we used to be so much better looking! But there were no Porsche's in our life back then..... We were sitting having lunch and as I mentioned it was SO WINDY. A 20' x 20' portion of the flat roof next door ripped off during a gust of wind and landed at the cars below, didn't hit anything, but was close. See the black on this roof? That's the area below the roof that blew off. In the next picture you see it all on the ground. The view from the restaurant. See you later VA City! We have to get truckin' back to Chicago. We had booked a hotel room in Park City, UT for the night. The drive out of VA City was OVER THE TOP. Pictures speak for themselves. I had reset the trip odometer coming out of VA City. We encountered much tumble weed on the way home. I had seen it before in WA State in the high desert, but Erik had never seen it. We had one about 5' tall hit the front of the car in Nebraska and just bounce over the top of the car, it was night and scared the **** out of us. We hit I-80 and would not deviate off this road until crossing the Illinois border where we would pick up I-88 for the last leg of our journey. The first day was full of rainbows, about 20 of them total.

POST 2Original post

Awesome pictures! Thanks for sharing! A long road trip with my car is definitely on the list now. Also when buying a car, it's so important to get to know the owner. Good call!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

We were still in NV, fueled up. Did I mention that the car was delivered to me with a FULL tank? What a nice touch! The sun was getting low in the sky. I-80 is one long road. Besides SLC, there is really no other major town between Reno and Omaha. We crossed into the Utah and about 75 miles out of Salt Lake City, we ran into our first snow of the trip.....this would not be the last. Slowed us down quite a bit, Erik was driving at the time. This is our last rest stop of the first day. We made it to Park City at about 9:15 PM, but with the time change, it was 10:15 PM. Had a quick dinner and went to bed. It had snowed a few inches over night. It was snowing when we got there. Leaving town, destination North Platte, NE. Most of these miles were from the first day. Did I say that I had Reno put new tires on the car before I left? Fred gave me his dealer pricing minus a few bucks, he paid for shipping, mounting and balancing. Continental DWS for $600 out the door. They played a key part in this trip, along with buying a C4! We had only gone about 75 miles at this point and crossed into Wyoming. OMG, it was ICY on the road! I basically **** a brick for about four miles. They use salt/sand vs. just salt and the road was so slick, was going 35-40 MPH and slip sliding away on the bridges. We got off and went to breakfast. The parking lot was an ice rink. Evanston, WY. After a great breakfast and chat with the locals, we got back on the road and there was no ice. The roads would go from terrible to awesome and back to snow again over and over again on this trip. And here is clears up.

POST 5Original post

Congrats and thanks for sharing your fly out - drive home. It's great that you shared it with a buddy. You will no doubt remember that trip the rest of your lives. As for the acceleration, both of you guys are pretty big dudes (no offense -I'm 250 lbs myself). So having both of you in the car probably had no small effect on acceleration. I sometimes wonder if I weighed what my wife does (130 lbs or more less than me) if I could notice a difference in how a car accelerates. Take that difference and add another big dude in the car and I'd say there would be a noticeable difference.

POST 6Original post

Oh one more thing: good call on the new tires and having a C4 for what you were exposed to. I would have some limitations with my C2, but I live in Cali so won't miss it much.

POST 9Original post

Great trip for you and your best bud. Lots of road pics to remember your 996 purchase. Your Porsche saw more snow on your trip than most do ever. Congrats!

POST 10Original post

Great pix, nice to see you aren't afraid to get it dirty! Glad you had a good trip, enjoy the car!

POST 11Original post

Wow! Very cool story. I'm near Chicago too. Enjoy your new car!

Even C2s have superb traction on the snow having its main weight on wheels with traction. With PSM ON, it is even more fool proof. Biggest issue is clearance if snow gets too deep, which did not seem to be a problem in this trip. But ice separates men from boys and creates white knuckles in a hurry, especially when condition shift back & forth as in this trip. Very much enjoyed those pictures and candid comments. Good luck with this low mileage car for yrs to come!

POST 13Original post

Way to go, Paul! Welcome to Pcar ownership - looks like you found a great example. A bit different than the S8, isn't it?

POST 14Original post

Wow -- great car, great friends, great trip! Thanks for sharing.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay, had to step away from the computer....the story continues: Here I am in WY, the wind is HOWLING!!! It's about 15 degrees and the wind is blowing about 35 MPH without gusts at a rest stop. Check engine light comes on at 784 miles, I finally got my Android hooked up to it last night, something about an implausible temperature sensor or something, it cleared it self the next morning, I can't remember the last time something like that happened to me. Two ugly guys: Here's the temporary location with napkins holding it in place for the iPod input: Here we are coming into a HUGE STORM, the pictures do it no justice. And within 10 minutes (I want to save 5), this is what we were driving in going 40-45 MPH with gusts of wind. It was crazy to say the least. It took about an hour to get through it. Finally out of it. We continued to drive to about 1250 Miles on day two, made it to North Platte. We were tempted to find a titty bar in Cheyenne, WY and spend the night. Day three, the morning before leaving the hotel.

POST 17Original post

Perfect! Almost as good a being there with you. Thanks for taking the time to share.

POST 19Original post

Thank you for posting your "Get acquainted" test drive. It was almost exactly the length, duration that Macster recommends for a test drive.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

And here is the last day....we left the morning from North Platte, NE. The sun was blinding..... We pulled off the road and went to see the Pony Express Station, not much to see, but it was pretty cool. A lot of things went along the Platte River, which I-80 follows. It's funny how there are absolutely no trees until you hit Nebraska, and as soon as you cross the border, there are trees all the way home. Coming into Omaha: We looked up a car wash as she was so dirty! Off again crossed into Iowa, didn't realize that Des Monies is only about 90 miles from Omaha. I took over just outside of Iowa City, and the weather set in. The wind was STILL HOWLING and the snow started, it got pretty hairy for a while. Pretty much all the way until we crossed into Illinois. We'll call it a "Quick Tip-Toe" across the last part of the state as we were relative experts now driving in this weather. Once we crossed into IL it was relative "Hammer Time", blowing snow across the road, high winds, and I was keeping it at 70 MPH + the whole way. I felt like a F1 driver, the lightests of inputs in both throttle and steering kept the car planted. Dropped Erik off at his house, got home at 8:30 PM Monday night. What a journey! It was awesome!! The car was so comfortable and quiet at high speeds, but get on it and it howls! Love the resonance notes of the exhaust during high throttle application. Let the mods begin!
