The problem was the "wheel" that hits the microswitch.
Leading evidence: '"wheel"' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is '"wheel"' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair wheel' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Based on reading and research, it looked like it was the microswitch attached to the lock mechanism.

I looked online and one other fella had repaired the wheel with epoxy and reshaped it.

Same here, replaced the drivers door lock mechanism with no issues.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I reconnected it and it worked fine again, so I didn't replace it.
So my driver's side window decided to not "stay down" when the door was opened. The window would crack down when I opened the door from the inside and outside. But once you let go of the handle, the window pops back up.
Based on reading and research, it looked like it was the microswitch attached to the lock mechanism. Wouldn't you know it, the most expensive of all the microswitches.
I took apart the door panel, which was kind of a PIA! Popping pieces off and trying not to damage it is not easy. Specially the door handle cover, and the "side airbag" emblem! Those were a ROYAL PIA! (For whatever reason, there were less screws on my door then references online. I have an '04. There is no screw inside the storage compartment.) Plus you don't want to break any of the plastic pieces!
Taking the mechanism out was a PIA as well. The mechanism is connected to the exterior door handle, and there isn't much room in there or really a good angle to see how things are connected! (Once you get it out, you understand how it all connects, but that's after you get it out!
)
So looking at my original lock mechanism, and testing, the "default" microswitch worked fine! The problem was the "wheel" that hits the microswitch. The wheel had a worn "groove" on it from rubbing against the switch.
I looked online and one other fella had repaired the wheel with epoxy and reshaped it. For me, I don't want to deal with taking the door apart again, so i decided to order a new lock mechanism. The p/n is 8N1837015C and I got it from Sunset Porsche. Ordered on Weds (day before turkey day) and received it on Fri!
I'm actually surprised that the switch works fine and that the wheel was worn down with a groove.
Tested the new mechanism to make sure it works as expected. I compared the new to the original mechanism. It looks like an updated version and there are some differences. One of the big differences is the microswitch itself compared to the old one. Hopefully this one is more robust. Also, the original mechanism had a metal clip to hold the microswitch in place. The new version does not.
Originally, I moved the clip from the old to the new (there were a couple of other pieces you had to move). But it's apparently the clip doesn't clip onto the new one the same way.
So now the window stays down as expected when the door is opened. Putting everything back together was waaaaaay easier. Could do it in 30mins easily.
Same here, replaced the drivers door lock mechanism with no issues. My passenger side window regulator has now gone; the window won't go down when the door is opened. Going to swap that out over the holidays.
I have my old door lock mechanism if anybody wants to fix it and have around for a spare. Just let me know and I'll ship it out.
This project is up next for me as well. The crazy thing is that my passenger window wasn't dropping when opened from the outside. I ordered the part and opened up the door panels to install the new part. The micro switch and wire were hanging loose. I reconnected it and it worked fine again, so I didn't replace it. All happy that I was able to fix it, I opened my driver side door and the window wouldn't stay down with the door open. What are the odds that this would fail while I was working on the other side?
About the same as mine. I did a bunch of work, IMS, RMS, Clutch, water pump and thermo, as soon as I put it all back together, open door, window won't come down. Really!? I didn't even touch that part! HA!
The car knows!
I was taking the front wheel off to drop it off to get balanced. Opened the door, and the window went down (as expected) and went up (not expected).
Maybe if you don't touch anything the microswitches stay fine!
