Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

i was told by the previous owner that the water pump was replaced recently before i bought the car.

Suggestion
If the leak comes from the water pump or water pump area you'll have to let the car cool down and then get it up in the air and check the water pump and the region/hose fittings in that region for where the leak is coming from.
Leading evidence: 'Replace i was told by the previous owner' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'radiator' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check water pump and the region/hose fittings in' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

So just because it was replaced does not mean it isn't leaking.

Suspected cause
If the leak is at the front of the car that's most likely a radiator.

Suggestion
Regardless, should be replaced anyways if still original.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys,
I noticed the car started leaking coolant recently and decided to do a little research online. One of the solution was to replace the expansion tank cap. I did that first since it was an easy and cheap fix. but it turns out that was not the problem.
So here i am looking into the second fix which is the expansion tank. Is it possible to loan the pressure tester at an autoparts store and will it come with the adapter needed?
Thanks
Autozone will loan you one and it will fit. They have several adapters in the kit. Also, if you have a harbor freight near by they have one for I think $30 that will work on all cars. I think it is the VW adapter that will work.
The question is - where is it leaking? Left side - expansion tank, overflow drain. Back side of engine - AOS and related piping. Front side of engine - water pump, hoses, AOS hose from water pump. Front of car - radiators and fittings. Need more information. Be careful pressure testing, about 20 psi max. and it may require some patience to find a leak. Some people suggest adding a UV fluid to the coolant to spot a leak. Good luck!
Precisely where it's leaking can tell you a lot, as can a few pics of the undercarriage with the car on ramps or jack stands...details and/or photos would help...
You can do a poor man's pressure test.
With the car dead cold top up the coolant level with distilled water until the level is correct. Be sure the cap is clean and where the cap screws to the tank clean and where the cap seals against the tank is clean.
Turn off the A/C.
Start the engine.
Drive the car around town until the engine is fully up to temperature and has been so for a while.
(Drive until the coolant temperature gage reaches "180". Then drive another 10 or 15 minutes.)
Back home raise the RPMs to say 1000 to 1200. Hold this until you hear or a helper confirms the radiator fans come on.
Turn off the engine.
If there is a coolant leak it will make itself know as the engine's heat load raises the coolant's temperature and pressure. The this pressure coupled with the heat the leak will almost certainly be visible.
My WAG is the leak is with the coolant tank. The usual leak is from the seam that runs along the bottom of the tank.
With the above pressure test the seam will let go and gush hot coolant.
Let the car cool down overnight and then the next day refill the tank with distilled water. Start the engine.
If there is no water running out of the leak you can drive the car some distance to the dealer or shop to have the tank repaired.
Or if you are going to replace the coolant tank do not refill the tank until after you of course get the new one installed.
If the leak comes from the water pump or water pump area you'll have to let the car cool down and then get it up in the air and check the water pump and the region/hose fittings in that region for where the leak is coming from.
If the leak is at the front of the car that's most likely a radiator.
There are good replacement pumps and cheap offshore ones... So just because it was replaced does not mean it isn't leaking. It is not hard to spot where a coolant leak is coming from....
cheers
