Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I test drove a 2004 Carrera 4S the other day that had the button on the dash for the PSE. I pushed it a number of times and didn't notice any change in exhaust sound and the light did not come on. Upon further inspection of the car and the options tag I found that it does not have option code XLF. So I'm thinking that either a previous owner had a sport exhaust installed at some point after it left the factory and the switch is no longer working, or someone thought it would be a good idea to put a button on the dash that does not do anything. Is there another way to verify if this car does in fact have the sport exhaust? Anything in the engine compartment or under the car that I could look for? Thank you, Will

POST 2Original post

Peek underneath at the mufflers and see if you can see the actuators. If it has them then you have the PSE mufflers. It very well could be that either the vacuum solenoid valve is broken or the valve is stuck either through corrosion or a blown diaphragm.

POST 3Original post

Good chance the solenoid valve or push rod is rusted and / or damaged from age.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the quick response guys! I'll try to get it up on a lift to check it out. Does anything need to be removed to gain access/visibility to this? Also, if it is in fact rusted/damaged, is there an easy fix (like removing it alltogether and having it permanantly in sport mode)?

You don't really need a lift as you can peak your head under with a flashlight and be able to see the exposed mufflers. Lift will def make it easier though. Mufflers should be in clear sight from underneath. You can buy a generic actuator if it has a broken or leaking diaphragm or let it soak in Kroil or PB blaster if the arm is just rusted and try manually moving or breaking the actuator arm free.
