Its like swapping a 3.6L M96 into a 996.1 and expecting it to run properly with the ME 7.2 And in that regard, you might be able to make the new airbag work if you swap over the corresponding SRS ECU and ancillary components.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Hope someone here can tell me if its possible to retrofit 991.2 steering wheel WITHOUT multifunction option on 991.2 steering wheel. I have 2005 996 C4S with tiptronic so need to get the paddels to function. Also need airbag, horn and paddles to work, I have talked to my Porsche Center and they tell me should be possible so I have bought this https://www.ebay.com/itm/352703925892

POST 2Original post

Edit: I think I misunderstood your question. Are you trying to retrofit a 991.2 wheel onto a 996? Or retrofit the options of one 991 steering wheel to another 991 steering wheel? Ah, that's a gamble! It might be more trouble than its worth. Just thinking off the top of my head, the 996 has a single stage airbag where the 991 is dual stage. So right there you are dealing with airbag / clock spring issues. Also, the Airbag control module monitors resistance in the airbags, if the resistance is wrong it will set a fault code. This is not to say that the 991 steering wheel might work with just the main stage of the airbag hooked up, but that's out of my wheel house.

POST 3Original post

From what I understand, the spines are different so you would need some sort of adapter as well. I saw this one the the classifieds the other day: https://rennlist.com/forums/market/1...eering%20wheel where it looks like you could use the base matched to the 996 and the top portion with the spines for a 997/991 where you can use the existing clock spring, but you would have to come up with a wiring solution for the shifters/airbag. The drawback I see is it would shift the steering wheel closer to you which may or may not be what you are looking for.

POST 4Original post

Sorry to ressurect this thread, I just bought a 996 and I am thinking of buying a 991 steering wheel butnwanted to know if somebody found a way of making the airbag work. Thanks guys

POST 5Original post

No idea if they sorted out the airbag, but I saved this Instagram post ages ago. One of the coolest 996 interiors I've ever seen. Worth reaching out to them if nobody else chimes in - @ max4s link

POST 6Original post

Exactly what I am looking for. Thanks man, I am new to the 911 community and your help is greatly appreciated. I just feel that by now there should be a solution to make thr airbag work. Honestly, trough photos I always thought the 996 interior was very ugly but I am really loving mine with blue full leather interior. Is such a nice place to be, now I love it even more than the new ones because it feels cozy and small while the new ones are too macanish 🤣🤣🤣

POST 7Original post

The owner made some nice interior upgrades to this C4S. It appears to be a full leather package in "Boxster Red". Adding the 991 steering in the matching leather was a nice touch as well as the OE club racing seats with the center Porsche pepita houndstooth fabric. Well done. Not overboard, just nice subtle upgrades.

POST 8Original post

Too much red in my opinion but does look good with the updated wheel!

POST 9Original post

Really love that car. i asked the owner in Instagram if the airbag works and he answered affirmatively. I asked if he could explain how he did it, hopefully he will give us some insight. Thanks to all of you guys for the inputs. I am really happy to be part of this forum.

Did you ever figure this out? I still need to wire the airbag, shifters and horn.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 19812681

Wouldn't the airbag wiring be the same? The yellow & red wire clips should clip in the same for both airbags? Just wondering as I'm thinking of doing the same mod.

POST 14Original post

Im going to resurrect this thread again as I️ am about to undertake this project. At this point Ive sorted out the mechanics of doing this, now Ive moved on to trying to understand the multifunction wheel. I️ have a wheel from a macan with multifunction and, while I️ know I️ can remove these parts and replace them with a manual setup, Im trying to see if this is possible with an aftermarket head unit. If I️ switch the clock spring to one from an automatic car, I️ will gain two extra wires. Does anyone have a wiring diagram of the newer wheels? Does anyone know where discreet analog outputs end and canbus starts? Thanks!

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 19992642

ok, were sort of in the same boat here. I have just ordered the VAG adapter and adding/added many steering wheels to my eBay watch list. For the airbag, Im going to wire the second stage up to the stock 996 clock spring. I keep reading that polarity doesnt matter but Im not convinced on that yet. An mf wheel with paddles can be converted to a manual wheel for about $200 in parts. Im probably going to stick to trying to to find a wheel with no buttons. Except heat.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 19993416

I️ think you will find a wheel with no buttons goes for way more money than it costs to convert a wheel with buttons. I️ got the Macan wheel for $260. Im going to re-skin it in Savannah beige. If I️ figure out a way to make the multifunction wheel work, Ill start a post.

Did this adapter work? Any sort of adapter for the airbag or clock spring?

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 20181852

I havent done anything else with it. Lost interest because summer time hit. Boat weather!! a 996 clockspring should work but the inner grooves will need to be ground out, and the airbag plug swapped over. Ill pick it back up over the winter and update.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 20186712

How's the weather over there? Cold enough to get you started? Very interested, although i am a bit worried about the airbag functionality. Not working in an accident is one thing, but activation without an accident sounds too scary. Not sure if that's possible though. I am too dump when it comes to electrics. Subscribed

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 20181852

This thread says the adapter will work - just need a thick washer. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...t-project.html

POST 23Original post

Pretty sure it will work (with some modification). I started this project again but the decided to fix the cruise control and tackle the front differential bearings on the a Panamera. ADD I suppose and/or not being able to find a non broken clockspring for under $100. The issue is the clockspring inner diameter is smaller than the upgraded steering wheel hub outer diameter. I think there is enough removable material in the 996 clockspring to make it work. Then youll need a plug to work with the later style airbag and decide to use the lower stage or higher stage airbag. If anyone have a broken clockspring laying around that I can try, Ill see if my theory is correct.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 20251172

can't you just wire both airbag stages to the same plug? Just cut off the plug to the 996 airbag?

POST 25Original post

I wouldnt dare to mess with the airbag. You run the risk of the airbag not firing in an accident, or firing at an incorrect time. In an accident, the airbag needs to fire at the proper time in order to cushion the occupants. Imagine if it fires a teensy bit too slow: your head will already have hit your steering wheel and the airbag accelerates your head towards your seat. The SRS ECU is preprogrammed to expect a certain airbag type and is calculated to function around it. If you go around swapping a different airbag in, all of the calculations are incorrect because youve changed a variable without telling the ECU. Its like swapping a 3.6L M96 into a 996.1 and expecting it to run properly with the ME 7.2 And in that regard, you might be able to make the new airbag work if you swap over the corresponding SRS ECU and ancillary components. By the way, Im far from an expert in airbags, but I know enough to not want to mess with them because I understand their importance in an accident. Although I cant find it right now, Ive read a first-hand report about 1st gen Audi TT driver with a MK6 GTI steering wheel - and its corresponding dual-stage airbag - and the airbag didnt even fire in a front end collision. The interesting thing about the MK6 GTI airbag is that it only has one receptacle for an airbag connector, but is technically a dual-stage airbag. And the Audi TTs original airbag was a single-stage, like our 996s.

POST 26Original post

Getting back to this, one step at a time. Ive bought a 996 clockspring, once its arrived Ill see if I can modify it in some way to make it work. Can use the steering wheel in my Panamera as the test wheel. More to come.

POST 27Original post

The innards of the clock spring is usually just a coil of ribbon cable, so I'm sure you can cut away the ID to fit. If that winds up breaking the "sliding" functionality of the clock spring that's really not a big deal, you just need to keep the coil protected from outside damage (the OD of the clock spring, which you weren't planning to touch). Good luck! Can also just make a new housing for the ribbon

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 20285121

Cheers! Clockspring was delivered today, need to figure out a time when I can have both cars out of commission for a day and start test fitting/trimming/figuring. Want to verify stalk cancelling and steering lock wont be affected by what I trim out, etc. I'm still looking into the airbag wiring, convinced its just a triggered loop but want to match polarity at a minimum.and figure charge comparison between the single and dual stage airbag. Probably not going to test airbag wiring until I know the wheel/adapter/clockspring combo will work. Then find a nice manual 991 or Macan GTS wheel.

POST 29Original post

Sussed and I'll post a how-to soon. This is the wheel from my 970 Panamera GTS (and needs to go back into it so I can drive it.....haha)

Hello, I have the steering wheel and the will but I don't have the know how. How did you solve it with the clockspring? I would like to have some input from you

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 19993645

So a Macan steering wheel will work in a 996? I see many have "paddles" and buttons. I have 04 C4S Tip. I'd like the paddles, turn-signals, horn to work and the airbag, whatever else works is OK, but not a deal breaker. What years Macan wheels will fit? I just saw a few in black and some?-kind of brown. TIA for answers... YMMV
