Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Before you change it check for clean tight connections, broken wires, etc....

Suggestion
The official Porsche stand on IMSB replacement it to pull the engine, strip it, split the cases, and replace the complete IMS with one that has the new larger (can't be removed with out splitting the case) bearing on it.

Btw: called a very high profile Porsche dealer to get a quote on replacing the IMS bearing.

The oil pressure sending unit is easy to change using a 19mm crows foot on a wobble extension coming up from the bottom.

Vertex carries the "Eternal" fix that uses roller bearings with an oil feed, Pelican's kit has a stock type bearing.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 2002 996 and all the chatter about failed IMS bearings has me on edge and not wanting to drive the car. Last week the oil pressure fell to 0, the warning lights flashing and before I can shut it down it comes right back up. The level is down 1 bar on the dash and no sounds of oil pressure failure. The car has 94,500 miles. I've only owned the car 10 months. It's done it twice.
Btw: called a very high profile Porsche dealer to get a quote on replacing the IMS bearing. $11,200.
My local dealer tells me $1100 just for the bearing. Of course I had to question the price of a single row standard radial ball bearing. (Didn't mention I sold power transmission products for a living)
I was told that maybe I'm not a person who should own a Porsche.
Called Porsche USA to price out the bearing. Yeah, they don't do that.
So what's up with the gauge? Or the engine?
If you didn't hear the engine self destructing then its probably just the sending unit. Very common and easy DIY. Just search and you will see plenty how to's.
IMS upgrade is a $2k job, and probably unnecessary for most cars but cheap insurance if you'll own the car for any length of time. KrazyK is right, oil pressure scare is common issue if you search forum, and easy fix. GL
Porsche dealer is probably not the best place to go to install an aftermarket IMSB. Remember their solution is to wait for the motor to fail and replace as a unit.
+1
This happened on my car and it was just a bad sending unit. Additionally, the dealer is screwing you big time with an $11,200 quote to install a replacement IMS bearing.
I see KK was successful in doing his job.
OP sell your car and get a Camry. It simply isn't worth it for your kind.
You can't place a price tag on your health. Soon you may discover high blood pressure, ulcers, migraines which might accompany your 996 ownership. Is that worth it?
It wasn't worth it to KK and the reason why he sold his car. Did you know that? Yet he still likes giving his advice to peeps like you on these forums.

There are multiple aftermarket DIY replacement bearing kits. Most for ~$500-$700.
LN engineering first, most popular kit,
Vertex carries the "Eternal" fix that uses roller bearings with an oil feed, Pelican's kit has a stock type bearing. There are probably 3 more kits out there including Flat six bushing kit not DIY yet (maybe never).
The oil pressure sending unit is easy to change using a 19mm crows foot on a wobble extension coming up from the bottom. Also accessible from the top but lots of "stuff" in the way.
