I imported the car from Japan to Canada and I believe the aero was not factory installed since it is not on the build sheet.

I'm using the stock airbox for intake, so want to make sure i'm not messing anything up.

Suggestion
i'm thinking it may just be the case of a 21 year old rubber snorkel that has lost some of its properties and needs to just be replaced with a new one that attaches better?

Personally i'd try to source a genuine MK1 aerokit lid and sell the genuine GT3 one then you can run the standard airbox

I am thinking of going to an after market air intake just to clean up the look because I probably do not have the option to use the factory snorkel.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have read that the aftermarket air intakes are no improvement from factory but what I have currently is not great either and looks terrible.
The fan is on the left. This is the problem and why the snorkel was removed previously when the aero was installed. I imported the car from Japan to Canada and I believe the aero was not factory installed since it is not on the build sheet. The aero deck lid is a Porsche part. Any suggestions?
So this is a European GT3 wing if it is a Porsche part number. Looks identical except for the two holes. for air intake. What it looks like to me is that they modified the wing by cutting the left hole into the decklid and took the rubber gasket from the right side of the factory hole and put it in the left side. Here is a Euro GT3 lid...
I had a look and that is exactly what they did. The hole on the left is cut in. Below is a picture of the improvised snorkel to go to the hole that was cut in. The flexible hose is just placed loosely in the open end of the air cleaner box where the factory snorkel would have attached. Not sure if this is doing much and it looks hokey. I am thinking of going to an after market air intake just to clean up the look because I probably do not have the option to use the factory snorkel. Thanks for helping me out and figuring out what was going on.
I am in British Columbia, Canada. The car is originally from Japan but left hand drive (most Porsche's in Japan from what I have seen on the auction sites are left hand drive). I bought it through an auction broker and had it shipped. Got it in March.
I don't like the look of the jimmy rigged snorkel that was installed. Personal preference I guess. Not sure if it is doing much either.
Agreed on the snorkel, it looks rigged up out of dryer hose. It looks more like a GT3 wing, with the intake on the opposite side. You might be better off fabricating a custom intake duct - carbon fiber would be ideal.
That is a good idea. I will look into who locally might be able to fabricate something that will work and look decent. It does not have far to go from the air cleaner to where the extra hole is cut on the left. From looking at Lowpue's picture he posted it is definitely a European GT3 wing.
Here is an aero lid...
I agree with your strategy to get after market system (even though we found on the dyno that the cold air kits don't work any better than factory). Something like this would work with your lid cutouts....plus looks good.

Thats a genuine GT3.1 lid - you can tell by the configuration and the part number stamp.
Personally i'd try to source a genuine MK1 aerokit lid and sell the genuine GT3 one then you can run the standard airbox
Thought I would resolve this thread with this post. I purchased the Fabspeed Competition Intake and installed it today. Install was straight forward and it looks way better than what was there before. What I didn't expect is the sound with the new intake. It sounds absolutely amazing!! I am shocked at how much better the car sounds.
This company offers left and right snorkel for 996 deck lid
They may have purchased one of these sets.
I have seen the left and right snorkel ducts in different photos of European cars.

I tried to buy that intake and the two air scoops from Porscheshop but when I looked it was out of stock. I emailed and called them but got no response. I think they were shut down due to COVID. So I ended up buying the Fabspeed Intake. I know people say that it just sucks in hot air but with my car having the GT3 rear deck lid with two air holes, it is a different situation then the stock deck lid. I drove it for 40 minutes hard on a twisty road, got home, popped the deck lid and felt the air filters and intake pipe and they were cool - same temp as the outside air. If you are driving in constant stop and go traffic I can understand the concern but I am almost never doing that (Thankfully!!).
I only linked to that company's product (EurocupGT) for reference of the snorkel setup.
They are no where near the quality of Fabspeed products.
I purchased a unit five years ago and sent it back. But the snorkel idea was what caught my eye.
Also
check out left and right snorkel for factory X51 3.6 CIA.
That is the only factory setup that I am aware of with left and right holes in deck lid on a normally aspirated 996.
The X51 CIA purchased from Porsche actually came with a template for cutting second hole.
That intake looks fantastic. Good job taking lemons and turning it into lemonade. The cold air intake may not add a lot more power, but it sure sounds faster.
Hey guys, don't mean to hijack this thread - I just actually put on a GT3 style fixed deck on my 1999 996 yesterday and removed the fan and snorkel as directed and put on the new decklid. Removing the snorkel was a piece of cake on the old one..what I noticed is that fitting it to this "Style" one isn't a perfect fit, which of course seems to be when you go aftermarket and not OEM. Anyways, I am able to attach it but very loosely. What I did notice is when I begin to close the lid it just falls of. My question is, do I need the snorkel to be a tight fit over the stock intake inlet for it to work optimally, ideally, correctly? I'm using the stock airbox for intake, so want to make sure i'm not messing anything up. Any suggestions on how to attach or seal it? i'm thinking it may just be the case of a 21 year old rubber snorkel that has lost some of its properties and needs to just be replaced with a new one that attaches better? The piece of metal isn't as thin or sharp as the original, so getting it to sit in the little slits doesn't seem to be possible. Maybe some type of automotive sealant, glue, 3m tape
Edit: I just compared the edges between this deck lid and oem decklid and theres no way this will fit as-is
I was thinking maybe something like this?
