Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey y'all, Looking to get into my first Porsche, found a 996TT with 78k miles going for $47k at a Porsche dealership. Talked to the salesman and got some info about the car. Apparently the dealership performed some maintenance on the vehicle after receiving it, nearly $9k in repairs the mainly the clutch and flywheel replacements. Namely, I was looking at the the DME report reading and found some pretty high numbers. Take a look Range 1: 38497 857.2 h Range 2: 18305 846.0 h Range 2 looks to have been hit pretty frequently, which leads me to believe why the dealership dropped a load of cash to perform the clutch and flywheel replacement. Any thoughts? I feel like I could bargain closer to $40k for the car with the miles and DME report maybe? Much appreciate the input!

POST 2Original post

That's kind of a lot of money for 78k, unless it's got some really good options like X50 or PCBB's. You also need to know the total hours on the engine, which is also on the DME report. Once you know total hours you can see how recent the type1 & type2 over-revs are. With 78K on the clock I imagine that the total hours are going to be more like 2000+. So the over-revs are probably a long time in the past and nothing to worry about. If the car was ever tuned the rev limiter is raised, which makes hitting type2's a lot easier. The over-rev reports on the 996TT DME really aren't all that useful anyway, you can get Type1's just by touching the rev limiter on the stock tune. The 997TT has 6 or 7 over-rev ranges and is a lot more useful. Replacing the clutch at 78k is not at all unusual, the clutch is hilariously small for the amount of torque it handles. And $9k is not out of line at dealer pricing either; the flywheel is over $2000 alone. You might get some more traction in the 996 Turbo forum: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum-60/ Even though I have a 996 Turbo I still check the normally aspirated forum as the cars are very similar.

Forgot about the op hours 896.9 h So last type 2 was over 50 hours.

Something doesn't compute. If the car has 78k miles accumulated in 896.9 operating hours, it was driven at an average speed of 78,000 / 896.7 = 86.9 MPH. Regardless, what I've read is that 10-20 hours after the type2 over-rev is the most likely to show any actual problems. 50 or more essentially indicates nothing to worry about. There are some 996TT gurus in the 996TT forum that probably can shed some more light.
