Read evidence and context

Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Could a 3.6l crankshaft with it's bearing case be installed into a 3.4l crankcase without large modifications? Ie. will the 3.4l crankcase accept longer stroke without interference? TIA, Pete

POST 2Original post

Not sure of what needs to be done but a while back Strasse Auto in Newport was fitting a 3.8 crank in a 3.4 eng always wondered how that turned out.

I just checked this from the PET. 997 crankshaft and crankcase carry 996- part numbers, as a matter of fact only the last digit is different between 996 3.6l and 997 3.6l or 3.8l. Just like to know if someone has first hand knowledge about this.

POST 5Original post

I imagine the chain drive gears are different, so it might not be a direct fit...

POST 6Original post

The two use different main journal diameters. Due to this you must either highly modify the 3.4 carrier, or retrofit a 3.6 carrier to the 3.4 case. Both of these are normal occurrences for us, but they both have their own set of challenges. What M code designation is your 3.4L?
