I've been looking at a GMC Canyon to replace my BMW daily.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey Guys, I'm closing the chapter on owning a Porsche 911 after owning my 996 for the past 14 years(owned a 1982 Targa prior). I've really enjoyed the chatter on this website having learned some things and also just been flat out entertained. After trying somewhat unsuccessfully to sell it outright(granted it was a half hearted effort), I opted to trade it in on a truck. Did I take a hit by going this route ?... Absolutely ! But it was time and the buyers looking at these cars have become so obsessed with IMS replacement, bore scoring, etc..., that it was simply easier to go this route. It's been well taken care of, driven a lot(it was my daily driver) so someone will end up with a fun car that has been pretty good to me despite all the fearmongering that is out there. At the end of the day, this is a 22 year old car and has aged better than virtually any other car out there at the same age. People(other than Porschephiles) can't tell the difference between a 993, 996, 997, 991, etc...
Porsche, There is No Substitute !
12k is not terrible considering the headache it is to deal with all the reenlist educated buyers on craigslist. I see the appeal to the trade in...I'm curious though why one would not go the online auction route. Seems like it's a relatively easy process and you only have to answer the same obligatory IMS fear question once. I've not done an auction it that a PITA too?
I don't think online auction is necessarily a PITA, but you have to take into account seller and buyers fees, and then if you set a reserve and it's not met you still have money out of pocket, and then its back to the drawing board. Sell it at no reserve, and you could get lucky and get a bidding war, or you could take a larger hit than trading in or taking the time to sell privately. Each avenue has its pros and cons, it really boils down to what dollar amount you can live with and how much energy you want to put towards selling.
Why does the seller have to take into account buyer fees? I saw cars&bids is advertising 89.00 for a reserve auction listing. Throw in professional pictures, whats that 500 more? Seems like an hour for a write-up and $600'ish, could net you a few thousand dollars extra, and if it does not work out send it to a Carmax. Am I missing something?
Didn't miss anything, you just answered your own question. It's not really a PITA, but online auctions have their own nuances to factor ($600 on a gamble that you MIGHT net more). If it doesn't work out and you trade it in at Carmax, now you're getting a low ball trade in and additional $600 loss. Or you could post it online yourself with no real money out of pocket and wait for the right buyer if you're not in a rush.
Curious on what kind of truck OP opted for. I've been looking at a GMC Canyon to replace my BMW daily.
Sorry to see you go.
Good luck with your future.
If you think of it, in six months or so, start a thread about post ownership relief or regret.
I am sure many of us have complicated selling, but didn't for one reason or the other.
We can't get some insight from the otherside

I bet you are also not a huge fan of being a landlord?
When things go poorly from the landlord perspective, it can often be disastrous. So theres a large risk in taking this on, and theres a skill that can be developed over time, often learning from mistakes made.
Trade-ins in Illinois are now worth less than they used to be because Illinois still taxes the sales price of the vehicle.
So for example, trading in a $13k car for a $55k car, the buyer still has to pay the sales tax on $55k instead of $42k (the trade-in credit).
Considering there are so many 996's on Bringatrailer.com you probably are not going to believe this; but those auction sites also do not accept every single car offered to them. There was an ex Las Vegas Rennlist member who tried to sell his Guards Red Mk2 cab, 6-speed with 70k miles. Great looking car, not modded save for the aftermarket black wheels. They rejected it. I couldn't believe it myself but he showed me a screenshot of the email.
Any particular reason offered for the rejection?
Not interested in selling my car but curious why an auction site that makes $ money (on both sides) for @ car it sells would refuse any listing unless there was something shady/suspicious about the vehicle being offered for sale.
Honestly that is pretty surprising, especially since there's been some pretty standard silver C2's that have made it to BAT. Could be a timing thing like you said where there were a bunch of others trying to submit at that same time. Either way, it seems like unless there's some uniqueness and the IMSB is sorted, BAT can be a gamble verse trying to sell privately.
Probably too many requests. Bat turned down my classic bike, 1976 Honda cb200t, 6100 miles. Granted, its not super special, but it was in top shape, lower mileage, etc. Hard to find, in my opinion.
I don't really understand why they wouldn't, recently there was a 320i "project" car that I don't even think was worth the $3k it sold for. Maybe because some of the requests on the rougher side of things all tend to go at no reserve so there's a guaranteed sale?

Interesting, been thinking about selling my 1970 Triumph 650 Bonneville on BAT, bike has 1200 original miles and perfect shape, I get a lot of request to sell it, but all come from the UK.
.
Reminds me of the 1968 Bonneville that was one of the first vehicles/bikes that I ever owned. I remember it fondly especially the manly process of kickstarting it but I also remember the oil leaks and Lucus electrical problems. LOL!
Nonetheless, it was and still is a classic!!!
Sorry to hijack Astro's goodbye thread, (c'mon, he knows this place well enough by now
) it had dawned on me that photo quality seems to play into BaT's selection process as well. I never got to see the photos that HawkFan submitted that got his car rejected. They could use "too many cars" as a blanket excuse as to not offend anyone.
