Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I race TT in my 996 and I do in fact run a 265 due to cost, also my class tire width is limited to 282mm as measured so I work to stay within that.
Leading evidence: 'Run 265 due' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run 265 due' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

At a track day yesterday, I saw a couple of 997s which were running 265s, and several Caymans, all of which were running 265s.

Next track day you should ask some of those guys why they're using 265's.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm going to be buying some sticky summer tires for backroads and track duty. My '02 Cabrio currently has Pirelli Pzero Neros (the factory spec tire from 20 years ago) in 225/40R18 and 265/35R18. (Apparently some Cabrios came with 265s instead of the 285/30s that are on coupes.) I am trying to decide whether I should go with 265s or 285s in the rear.
At a track day yesterday, I saw a couple of 997s which were running 265s, and several Caymans, all of which were running 265s. At first, I was thinking of sticking with 265s because the 911 is really hard to get the tail to step out during street driving, and even took some work to get it to oversteer at autocross. But at the track day, the tail was a lot more prone to coming around under trail braking--I did the first session with the PSM off and it was a little.. loose, but I did sessions 2-4 with PSM on and the car was a lot more manageable--it would step out the rear a bit, but the PSM would kick in before it got really sideways. So given the more tail-happy nature of the 265s at the track, I'm thinking maybe I should go for 285s in the rear.
What do you guys think? 265s or 285s?
Next track day you should ask some of those guys why they're using 265's. If I had to guess my guess would be it's because they're cheaper and they go to a lot of track days.
I race TT in my 996 and I do in fact run a 265 due to cost, also my class tire width is limited to 282mm as measured so I work to stay within that. The car is plenty stable with a 225/265 as long as the alignment, pressures, and driving are all okay. It is very easy to overheat the rear tires on 911s, also try a stickier tire on track than the P Zero. Now that the F1 Supercar 3R comes in 235/275 I will be giving those a shot.
I would assume 285s would have more traction than a 265. But as you indicated, you dont have traction issues with 265s right now. Unless you think you can also squeeze more rubber on the front, in which case, try both front and rear, and the car should have more traction overall. In theory, lol.
I am thinking long and hard about the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires--great reviews on Tire Rack and not painfully expensive--in 235/40 and 275/35. Basically 10mm (indicated) wider in front and rear for theoretically more overall grip at both ends.
