Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. I replaced the ignition switch yesterday and after the remote lock/unlock function ceased to work.

Oh, and I did try to re-enable the key in case it decided that the car hadn't been used for more than 5 days!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So, there are a lot of posts about remotes not working and a lot of valuable information, but unfortunately I have not been able to find a situation similar to mine.
This is for my sons's '03 Boxster, but should be relevant to 996's.
I replaced the ignition switch yesterday and after the remote lock/unlock function ceased to work. The button on the remote does flash. Just in case I had a weak battery, I replaced it with no effect.
When you manually lock the car with the key, the horn will honk and the dash LED's will double flash as if a frunk is open.
When you unlock the car with the key, the LED's will rapid flash for ~15 sec then the alarm will go off until you turn the key in the ignition.
I can simulate this in my 996 by popping the frunk and locking the car (either with remote or key), then ulocking with the key only. However, even with the frunk open, the remote will still arm the alarm and disarm the alarm without having to put the key in the ignition and it won't on the Boxster.
I have replaced the ignition switch in several other Porsches (including the 996 a week ago) and have never had any issue with the remote. So, it is quite possible that the two events are unrelated and merely coincidental.
However, I am quite at a loss as to how to resolve the remote issue. It seems highly unlikely that the fob would just randomly lose its programming. It is possible that the transceiver failed, but the LED in the remote still functions. It is also possible that I inadvertently FUBAR'ed something under the dash but I have no idea what that could be.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Brad
Hi. Sounds similar to the same issue I had.
Here's my thread on it:

Ultimately, I think you will need to get the key reprogrammed by the dealer. Unfortunately, they do, in fact, seem to randomly lose their programming.
