The dealership that replaced the fuel level sender said they checked that area for leaks by smoke testing it but who knows if they were blowing smoke or not given that they gave the car back with the problem still happening.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Nope, still getting a fuel odor when I fill the car all the way up.
Hello everyone,
I'm having some trouble with my 2002 Turbo that I was hoping to get some opinions on. The car had a gas smell coming from the front end so I brought it in for service. They found that the fuel level sending unit was the problem so they replaced it.
Got the car back & the smell still exists when I fill the car up (not topping off... just filling till the pump shuts off).
Ok so I buy a new fuel vent valve (3 way valve) and put that in to see if that fixes it. Nope, still getting a fuel odor when I fill the car all the way up.
I've read that it could be that the car is filling up the charcoal canister filter however I was under the impression that was only if you were topping off the car which I am not attempting to do. My next step is going to be to replace the gas cap and see if that helps but the seal & cap look fine so I doubt that is the issue.
Any ideas on what I could check out or what it could be? My step to avoid it currently is to never fill it higher than 3/4 full or after filling it, go for a spirited drive before bringing it back to park it. Both of which are not optimal so I would like to fix the issue rather than just avoiding it.
Any ideas?
Great point. I will post there as well. Found some good info in the 996 forums so I figured I should post here. Good call on the turbo forum as well. Thx!
I'll check that today to see. The dealership that replaced the fuel level sender said they checked that area for leaks by smoke testing it but who knows if they were blowing smoke or not given that they gave the car back with the problem still happening.
In reading the thread, I was thinking the fuel lines too. Had this problem on a 5 series BMW with a fuel smell filling the compartment after every fill up. My shop checked fuel lines and discovered that mice had feasted on them. Had the lines replaced and had no more problems.
