The IMS was replaced on my 99 at 93k miles and only because the clutch was getting replaced so made sense to do it at the same time.

The internet certainly skews actual results IMHO, used primarily as a way to reports problems and failures, not satisfaction and reliability.

Also when cars come for inspection, Porsche owners again will be more fastidious than average owner; so they replace things pre-emotively and keep cars in "showroom" condition because their car is their "baby".

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Tuv has released its ranking for 2015 few weeks ago. http://www.tuev-sued.de/auto-fahrzeu...d-fehlerzwerge 911 is the most reliable car in the 7 9 and 11 year. and placing high in 3 and 5 year olds! If you check their previous reports every 996 (1999-2004) comes number 1 in the 11 year olds! Weird reading these forums you would think its a ticking time bomb that when it goes off and it will go off, you have to send it to Jake, spend 15k and wait 2 years or spend 25k on new engine. It's kinda sad that we are more interested in arguing and making up stuff instead of looking at scientific proof. This spreads to other areas in our lifes (Ferguson being a recent example). Be Thankful for what you have as we might not have it for long.

POST 2Original post

Sound encouraging. I'm going to look at a 2003 C4S that has over 90,000 miles on it and original IMS bearing.

POST 3Original post

The IMS was replaced on my 99 at 93k miles and only because the clutch was getting replaced so made sense to do it at the same time. Otherwise the car seems to have been very reliable for the previous two owners at least based on all of the service records I have. I bought it recently with just over 100k on the clock. And fully intend to put 50k if not more on it myself!

POST 4Original post

I lived in Deutschland for 3 yrs. 996 don't have nearly the stigma they do here It's well understood as the 911 that brought Porsche to the modern age People also slap winter Reifen on them and drive them year round Gasoline formulation is also vastly different and TUV requirements are so strict you can't get away with poor maintenance - see what's involved here to get your inspection sticker ! Periodic Technical Inspection (PTI) at TÜV NORD - YouTube

POST 5Original post

Certainly this has to be a more scientific sampling than our own polls here. We obviously cannot discount the fact that there have been engine failures but this gives evidence to the feeling that these failures are the exception and not the rule...by a very very wide margin. When considering this information it might suggest that the failure rate is more in the 3 to 5 percent range. After three major deisign changes and with continued failures, this could suggest that owner error may be involved as an instigating cause.

POST 6Original post

The internet certainly skews actual results IMHO, used primarily as a way to reports problems and failures, not satisfaction and reliability.

POST 7Original post

As a German I have a more pragmatic approach to Porsches: cars break. And if you can't stand the beer don't go to Oktoberfest. Simple.

POST 8Original post

Wait, people in Germany drive 996s during the winter? Are they CRAZY! What about the black ice that is so rampant over there? How is that possible?

POST 9Original post

As a former owner of 2003 996, it is refreshing to know this; I had and drove the car for 6 years, and enjoyed it immensely every time I drove it. It was well maintained; the IMS bearing was upgraded prophylactically (the original one was in excellent condition with no sign of failure)

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 11836302

I always wondered if in Europe the 996 had less problems with the IMSB. Just maybe in Europe they know how to drive the stick shift better than the American drivers. The Europeans don't get to drive on the roads UNLESS they pass on a stick shift car. Not so in the States. Knowing WHEN and HOW to change gear goes a long way in protecting an engine. Even a top class engine as the Porsche. All this ****e I hear from American drivers about 'dropping a clutch' and 'slamming these cars down' and removing 'clutch assistance springs' from the 'would be racing car drivers' in the States make me cringe. I would sooner buy a 996 in Germany than in the States but I have what I have with the original IMSB and it will stay that way. WHY? Because I am driving it and I passed my stick shift test in the UK. Plus I am an Ex Cop Advanced driver. We know how to 'warm an engine up in the winter' before hammering it. The Automatic drivers never had to learn that technique. Anyway, I say thank god for the American drivers. They brought down the price of the 996 and that's why I have one today.

POST 11Original post

Isn't this a bit misleading? A high proportion of owners put their cars away for the winter and/or use it as a fun car which means that they don't put that many km on them. It seems to make sense that fewer km = fewer reliability issues. Makes sense?

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 11837877

Unless that behavior is unique to 996 owners it doesn't make sense... If drivers also put away other models of 'fun' cars for winter then the data is still sound at least with regards to comparison of other fun cars...

POST 13Original post

The poll is misleading and "conclusion" in the title of thread is just stupid. 911 is a "toy" and "baby" car in every part of the world, Germany included. 911 is owned mostly by the enthusiasts who are **** about every drop of oil and meticulously maintain their low mileage cars. Also when cars come for inspection, Porsche owners again will be more fastidious than average owner; so they replace things pre-emotively and keep cars in "showroom" condition because their car is their "baby". Hence, 911s will "show up" in the better shape compared to the hondas/toyotas of the same age. Now, look at the % of the cars with over 200,000 miles available for sale; that tells you a real story of "reliability". Acura TL/Honda Accord are #1 car with over 200,000 miles on the odometer, followed by the Toyota/Lexus cars and HD trucks. There are hardly any Porsches with over 200,000 miles; they are unicorns of the Porsche world. http://www.businessinsider.com/cars-...-miles-2014-10 Here is engine reliability poll from the warranty company. The predictable company is on top by an ENORMOUS margin. Porsche is nowhere to be found. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/...10-brands.html
