Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey All Long time Porsche fan and first time RL poster. A few months ago I received a call out of the blue from an uncle who was looking for a good home for his 01 Lapis Blue 996 C4 Cab . Of course, how could I say no? The car will be shipped to me and arrive in early August. My uncle bought the car in 2004 with about 19k miles and added the next 11k over 16 years, so its had some idle time, which I plan to work on Ive done searches and reading on the car and maintenance and would like to get a few opinions. Its on the factory IMS, so thats on the radar right away. While its in the shop I want to make sure it gets a full look over and any needed maintenance. Heres my checklist: IMS Full fluid flush RMS Should this be done proactively or as needed? Check AOS Water Pump Check clutch/flywheel Check transmission mounts Check coolant/vacuum hoses/connectors Check fuel injectors Check plugs Check all seals Check coils Check coolant tank Of these, should I replace any proactively while the IMS is being addressed ? Are the preferred all-season tires for the C4 the Michelin P/S AS3+? Or I could possibly do a summer/winter setup. I plan on driving year-round, including occasionally (<5 times/year) in snow. Does anyone know of a good source for a Lapis hard top? I havent been able to find one for a reasonable price. What are the mo st bang for the buck power mods? Preferably easily reversible to stock. Thanks for any input! -Mike

POST 2Original post

Congrats, looks like a great example and well taken care of! should I replace any proactively while the IMS is being addressed ? - Depends how deep your wallet is and who you want to listen to. If you can spare the money it's added insurance, but each may not be necessary. RMS isn't a big deal if you're doing IMSB so might as well. Clutch and flywheel probably fine given mileage. Water pump / coolant tank / cap not bad idea as a proactive measure. Are the preferred all-season tires for the C4 the Michelin P/S AS3+? - Can't speak since only "drive" on temperate days on Mich PSS's. Does anyone know of a good source for a Lapis hard top? - Can't speak on this much either, have heard finding hardtops in general can be a bit difficult. What are the mo st “bang for the buck” power mods? Preferably easily reversible to stock. - Typical bolt ons, exhaust, intake (although many will say the 996 airbox is sufficient), short throw shifter, things of that nature Enjoy! Blue on tan cabriolet is a great combination!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Billup! As for budget, I want peace of mind and would like to stay ahead of the common stuff, especially while the IMSB is being done, so I don't want to throw money around, but I want to stay ahead of the big stuff.

POST 4Original post

Personally if I was going to use the car during the winter and snow I would pick up a set of dedicated tires for the winter. It makes such a big difference over all seasons on any car I've had.

POST 5Original post

Dang, I have a hard top I am considering selling but it is Midnight Blue Metallic. Nice car! Enjoy!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In transit! ETA: Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

POST 8Original post

Wow, love the car and story! For the power mods, my advice is to wait a bit, drive the car and see if you feel that anything is lacking. My opinion is the exhaust is the area to focus on, but take a bit of time, do some research and make targeted decisions. Enjoy!

POST 9Original post

Mike, I've been rejuvenating a lapis blue '01 C2 cab since I bought it with 54K miles in December. A lot depends on where your C4 has been living. If your uncle lives in a rust belt state, then check the exhaust and everything in the wheel wells for corrosion. Mine lived in WA and CO, so no rust. With only 30K miles, the clutch is probably in good shape but it depends upon driver skill more than miles, so check it for wear when the IMS and RMS are being replaced. Also, add to your list to check the engine mounts, which are cheap and easy to replace. If the paint has swirl marks, which is probable, the lapis blue responds beautifully to color correction and polishing. Most of what I've done is preemptive and it's reassuring to know I'll likely get home after spirited driving in twisties. I've enjoyed the garage projects and driving it, so I'm sure you'll have fun also.

Appreciate the advice - very helpful! The C4 lived it's entire life (until now) in Southern California, so it's in excellent shape as far as corrosion goes. The paint is in surprisingly good shape, but I'll still spend several evenings with the polisher on it to get it perfect. Interior is in pretty good shape, but some of the wood trim needs replacing, so I'll take care of that over time. On that note, Christmas came early yesterday! Got a few top down drives in and then off to the shop today for IMS, rubber and a good look over for anything else.
