Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Run just fine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace solenoid the engine started' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When I had replaced the solenoid the engine started to run just as it should.

As i mentioned above I have some solenoids (from my old crashed engine) in my garage and I decided to simply replace the solenoids on bank 1 and see what happens.

Make sure you test very thoroughly before throwing parts at the car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I had to replace my intake camshafts since the old ones had damaged camshaft sensor discs (I bought a used engine without the electric wires). The engine worked before (no CEL but intermittent camshaft sensor fault) but didn't run properly (since the discs were damaged).
I did the job myself and everything went fine. The engine started up and ran just fine. A few days after the job I noticed that my car started to idle rough and the day after I got a CEL and I read the fault code 1341. I also got some fault codes from misfire on cyl 2,3 and 6 (P300, P302, P303, P306).
The car is a 3.6l 996 C2 2002.
I think it is a bit strange that the engine worked fine for a few days and then... What are the steps to trouble shoot this?
Robert
Do you have a Durametric or something equivalent? You will need that to see what the variocam adjuster is doing. If you also find some green bits inside the oil filter then the Variocam tensioner ($1,000) is toast.
But I have a 2002 3.6 engine. I believe that you are referring to the variocam up until 2001. I have both a lift adjuster and a timing adjuster. I dont know which of these solenoids isnt working properly. How do I know?
Robert
You have to manually activate the solenoid to see if it makes a ticking sound. That would be the first clue if it makes no noise. Having a Durametric can let you see the cam timing as you activate the solenoid. It will be obvious if the solenoid is working or not.
P1341 Camshaft Adjustment, Bank 1 Below Limit
Potential causes:
 Short to ground
 Actuator faulty
 Open circuit in triggering wire
 Open circuit in B+ supply
Keep in mind, you may get misfires on all cylinders if the solenoid is bad or not activating.
Good thing you have an mkii, as its easier to replace if its bad. On my mki car, the DME activates both solenoids via a transistor, so if theres a problem with one bank, it could affect the other bank.
Make sure you test very thoroughly before throwing parts at the car. People think plugs and coils, MAF sensors, crank sensors, etc - could contribute to the problem - but they often do not.
As i mentioned above I have some solenoids (from my old crashed engine) in my garage and I decided to simply replace the solenoids on bank 1 and see what happens. The cost is kind of zero and it is not much work. I guessed that the solenoid controlling the valve timing would be most likely to malfunction considering the symptoms. When I had replaced the solenoid the engine started to run just as it should.
Problem solved!
