Suggestion

First start of day if on flat and level: Key to on, wait for e-guage to tell you the oil level(but check once per week, minimum, with stick after sitting all night again on flat and level), start engine, put on seat belt, drive off staying below 3,000rpm until water gauge is up to normal.(actually 160f but I wait until 180 before leaning on it.)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just got my 996 back from the shop - every last little thing is currently handled. So now my mind is on prevention. I'm very curious to know what tips and tricks everyone here uses to keep the car in its best shape. Fuel additives? Things like that? Suggestions appreciated!

POST 2Original post

Maybe a bottle of Techron added to a tank of gas, run it out then change the oil

POST 3Original post

New injectors, new intake fuel line check valves, and fuel pump. Fueling issues have started popping up more frequently. Just ordered all of that for my car while I’m doing a major build on it.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16827189

what were the financials for that? If you dont mind sharing.

POST 5Original post

Heres some Golden Rules I stick to: * Use the best fuel possible eg BP min 98 RON imho * Start it, wait a few seconds then drive it. Dont leave it idling to get to temp * Dont take short cuts on quality of oil & filter and change often * Check fluids at least weekly and get on top of the required change intervals ie coolant, brake fluid, trans, diff etc. Also change intervals for air, pollen, trans, fuel where applicable I get great peace of mind when these issues are addressed even though I know my mechanic is on top of them. Your car is beautiful. Hope you get many miles of happy motoring.

POST 6Original post

to add to what Joe said above: oil and filter 3,000 miles or six months which ever comes first. First start of day if on flat and level: Key to on, wait for e-guage to tell you the oil level(but check once per week, minimum, with stick after sitting all night again on flat and level), start engine, put on seat belt, drive off staying below 3,000rpm until water gauge is up to normal.(actually 160f but I wait until 180 before leaning on it.) Enjoy the car. It is a looker!

POST 7Original post

Chicken bones. Sprinkling of blessed water from a virgin AOS. Daily reading from “The Holy Modes of Failure”. A censer filled with burning 5w40 wafted over the engine bay. A sacrifice of a quart of DT40 every 600-800 miles. So all the usual stuff.

POST 8Original post

I've been driving mine in the hills of West Virginia and Virginia the last two weeks. High revs, up and down mountains. I feel like it freed anything up that was stuck. I'm at about 1600 miles in 14 days, drove it out here for work from Chicago. Will be going home next week. tEQrjii.jpg

POST 9Original post

This is what I do with all of my vehicles: Fix everything that needs fixing, do routine maintenance as necessary and preventative maintenance in advance when possible and don't obsess about other sh*t that really doesn't matter.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 16827208

roughly $300 in parts

POST 11Original post

drive it hard as hell every day. Putting things around like a grandma is no good for anything. Stay up on oil changes. Repeat.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 16828048

Beware that injectors for the Mk1 are way more expensive than for the later cars. A set of Genuine Porsche injectors is over $600 and there is no Bosch OEM part available.

POST 13Original post

Change oil every 7k or so, have magnets wrapped around the oil filter (works to collect ferrous sludge). only fill with Chevron or she'll premium gas, use techron now and then, never leave car idling for long, warm up slowly each time, don't drive the car hard (bought it for just cruising)

I like it.........funny stuff......

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 16827189

My recipe was frequent oil changes and drive it twice a week. Last year I did the injectors and it was a HUGE change in the car. The DIY on the injectors is a PIA. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...at-my-car.html

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 16827346

Right. Like anyone can find a virgin AOS in this day & age.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 16828311

I don't think Porsche makes injectors. Also, the .2 injectors can be made to work in the .1 engines.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 16828383

They are shameless vixens!

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 16828375

An OT aside: Man, your recco to pull the rail and pull/push the injectors, then wrestle the rail back in...saved a bunch of time and kept several dollars out of the swear jar! Left side was biggest pain due to plethora of vacuum lines to carefully burrow around.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 16828398

Glad to help. Usually the things I do serve as a cautionary tale rather than sound advice.

POST 21Original post

Drive it often, drive it hard (after reaching operating temp), and thank it by name for performing every time you get back into garage. Oil changes every 6 months or 3-5k with UOA.

POST 22Original post

Don't idle it cold. Once the engine is at operating temp (look at your oil pressure as a way to estimate when the oil is up to temp) keep it above 2500rpm Change oil at least every year or every 6k miles At every service check cam deviations and AOS condition (using manometer) Use gas from brands that bear the top tier certification

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 16828389

The Genuine Porsche injectors are almost certainly made by Bosch, but for some reason Bosch discontinued offering their corresponding part number. Ive read that the .2 injectors can be cut to fit, but I havent seen a guide for how to do it.

Any particular roads you recommend? I'm in Northern Va and have worn out my usual route, need something new with some twistys

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 16827151

Far better to only put Top tier Gas in the car that has the Techron additive in Chevron Supreme or Shell premium. When I worked at Shelby & Saleen making new cars the EPA certification engineers said to put nothing but Chevron Supreme gas in them for best performance
