Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My digital oil level display is very accurate but you need to make sure you are comparing apples to apples when checking the gauge (eg.
Leading evidence: 'Check gauge (eg' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check gauge (eg' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

My 3.4L generally doesn't burn a drop, but two oil changes ago I did notice a drop on the dipstick.

What should I expect for oil consumption between changes on healthy 3.4L 996 engine?

Suggestion
There are some instances (using the car for short trips, for example) where a car will seem to burn more oil than others.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What should I expect for oil consumption between changes on healthy 3.4L 996 engine?
After close to 2k miles, my digital gauge was at the bottom. So I topped it off with a little over a half quart, which brought it right to the top of the gauge (both digital and dipstick). Thats more oil consumption than any other (healthy) car Ive owned.
Googling tells me this is pretty normal for a Porsche, but the threads related to oil consumption are all pretty old. Whats the current thinking on this?
My 3.4l (2000 C2) does not consume any oil even after several thousand miles, however, I think 1/2 qt. consumption in 2,000 miles would certainly fall within the normal range.
BTW, I thought the difference between the bottom and top range on the digital oil level readout (as well as the dipstick) was far more than 1/2 qt. I thought it was more like 1.5 qts.?
Perhaps more important than the rate of consumption, is monitoring for any change in that rate. All engines use SOME oil. Knowing how much your particular engine usually uses is the key. A sudden change in this average is a red flag
Youre right. While the digital readout was at the bottom, the dipstick was only about halfway down. Ive seen others comment that the digital sensor is not as accurate as the dipstick.
The owner's manual states, "the car will ingest oil." The amount of oil per mile that is acceptable is listed there, I just don't have it to hand.
Also, I don't know if this car is new to you or not, but is it consistently eating oil? There are some instances (using the car for short trips, for example) where a car will seem to burn more oil than others. My 3.4L generally doesn't burn a drop, but two oil changes ago I did notice a drop on the dipstick. But it hasn't happened since.
My digital oil level display is very accurate but you need to make sure you are comparing apples to apples when checking the gauge (eg. always checking the level with the engine cold in the garage after the car has been sitting at least overnight). Also, I think the digital gauge may be a bit more sensitive to the car not being parked on a level surface than the dipstick.
