Young guy hooked it up to small box, left it on for 60 seconds, inspected the battery (I assume looked for CCA or something) and said battery is good, just needs charged.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just as the title says. In the recent 10 degree days after sitting all night the car starts without a problem but cranks slow. Took to aurozone to get a new battery and they tested it first. Said it is good and just needs charged. It's an econopower batteryade in Spain. It has a sticker that says 45/10 which I assume is the production week it was made. Looked up econopower and it is the interstate economy battery. It is the big battery, the clamp is in the third slot. Voltmeter says 14 when I am driving. So what do I do next?

POST 2Original post

If you have a BlueTooth Dongle check what your charging system is doing while your driving... make sure your getting 14.x volts at all times... I usually get 14.4-14.7 overall. If the battery has seen some hard winters like last year it might not hold a good charge... Do you have a trickle charger? If so charge her up over night and then check and see what she does... Good Luck!

POST 4Original post

Bro, what is it with you and the low temps? Your going to destroy your engine.

POST 5Original post

Are you locking your car when you leave it overnight? It takes more out of a battery to keep the car unlocked than it does when the alarm is on. Just a thought.

POST 6Original post

Verify the cold cranking amps your battery is supposed to supply and compare that to what the car requires. Battery size is not necessary an absolute indicator of cranking power. You may simply be obtaining "economy" power from your "economy" battery. +1 for checking oil type/weights. You want full synthetic 0W40 for temps that cold. If in doubt, change the oil to the correct type/weight.

Wow, lots of responses overnight Mobile 1 0w40 every 3-5,000 miles If it does, it can be fixed. Usually leave unlocked. But it does not do it in the summer. Looked at the battery and the CCA is no where on it. What do they do when they test a battery at Autozone? Young guy hooked it up to small box, left it on for 60 seconds, inspected the battery (I assume looked for CCA or something) and said battery is good, just needs charged. This AM put battery back in. Volts read 12.04 cold and after not sitting in the back of the truck overnight. Then started car and it read 14.28 volts while idling. Temp is in the 30's. Car cranked a little slower than in the warner weather but not as bad as when it was 10 degrees outside. From these results it seems like the battery is holding a good charge and the alternator is working fine. I don't think its a drain. I have a lot of experience with these and they are the same in cold and warm weather. Anything else I should check?

POST 8Original post

My only experience with slow cranking of either one of my Porsches the problem eventually proved to be the battery. One time when the Turbo slow cranked I took it to the dealer to have the battery checked. The tech reported the battery checked out OK in the AM but when he checked it again at the of the day it was down and I had the battery replaced. Before you replace the car's battery, check with the Porsche parts department. In some cases Porsche has upped the battery AH's, CCA's and the "stock" battery or the battery car originally came with from the factory is no longer the "right" battery.

POST 9Original post

I found this battery testing video interesting and informative. He is a little long winded but there is good info here, and a cool new tool to buy. (for me anyway) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oi8sUE9XCgA#t=652 You may have to restart it, for some reason I can't get it to start from the beginning again on my computer??

POST 10Original post

Oh and BTW, buy the biggest battery you can squeeze in there. You will have to move the mount but it will work. There is a thread I posted about it.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, the diagnosis is changing on a daily basis. I think the alternator may be bad. Sometimes runs at 14.2volts, but most of the day running errands was 13.6-13.7. I confirmed the accuracy of the gauge with a voltmeter. So used for $100, off brand for $120, or bosche for $300?

POST 12Original post

I would have an alt shop test yours to be sure. You can have it rebuilt or replace it after your sure but remember you need a healthy battery as well.
