Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, I'll preface this by saying I've researched this install printed out a nice write up (or so I thought), and thought I'd be able to knock it out in 4-5 hrs. It actually started out really well. I took my time, got the front of the car up on jack stands, and removed the front wheels and all the frunk plastics necessary to access the strut tower bolts. At this point I started the dis-assembly of the front left wheel carrier/brake lines, sway bar links etc. Once this was all finished, I loosened the bolts at the top of the strut tower. Upon loosening the strut/spring assembly began to drop (as per instructions)...Unfortunately, not far enough to remove it from the wheel well - it's being blocked by the axle (oh yeah that's right it's a C4 - all wheel drive...gee I didn't see anything about removing the axles in the write-up...). So, at that point I wasn't prepared either time wise or confidence wise to start removing the front drive axles without doing a little more research into what's involved. I've done a little more poking around via the search function, but I've gotten hundreds of non related threads so far...If anyone's got some specific info regarding the removal of the front drive axles, it would be greatly appreciated!

POST 2Original post

Contact member Dharn. He has done this to his C4. There are some different steps compared to a C2.

POST 3Original post

When I put the X74 on my 996 (C4) I loosened the carriage underneath. It became a teeter totter and I was able to get one strut out (very careful not to let the 3 threaded studs hit the fender) and the other one just dropped out. If you do it this way also be careful you don't rip the outer cv boots. Another way to gain access is to remove the half shaft axles.......it's not that bad.......loosen the big *** nut on the wheel / hub and remove the 6 socket head cap screws on the other end. IF you do remove the axle make sure you torque that big *** nut right. It's something like 310 ft/lbs. Good luck!

POST 4Original post

You need to compress the springs (using a spring compressor) before removing them. This will allow you enough room to pull the assembly out.

^Yeah^ That's exactly why I "buttoned her back up" instead of soldiering onward My torque wrench only goes to 200 ft lbs. and my impact wrench only goes to 260 "You need to compress the springs (using a spring compressor) before removing them. This will allow you enough room to pull the assembly out." Hmmm, I've got the spring compressor (actually had it all along...) so maybe I'll try this route first before messing with the axles. Thx in advance!

POST 6Original post

Look up how to install coilovers on a Turbo. 6 speed has a nice write up. AWD suspension install is MUCH more involved than C2.

In reverse I think the impact wrenches carry more power. Mine did when I backed the 30 something mm nut off. To tighten it there is a shade tree way to get the proper torque. It's a formula (can't find it) that includes weight (you), a breaker bar, a pipe (acts as an extension to the breaker bar), distance (this is where the pipe comes in). I actually found it here on RL a while back. Based on your weight and the torque you need the extension length will be calculated. Attach the socket to the big *** nut so that the breaker bar is horizontal and you are able to stand on it, measure how far down the pipe you need to add your weight and start hopping on it. Worked like a charm. I know some eyes are rolling but you gotta work with what you got sometimes.

Sounds like that torque formula should be in a sticky somewhere! Thanks for the tip!

You wouldn't happen to have a link to ^This^ would you? I (my searches) haven't been able to find it. Thx in advance...

POST 14Original post

Anyone with a write up for installing H&R lowering springs on a 2003 C2? I would like to do this myself but am not very mechanically inclined. Thanks!
