I lowered my car a month ago and already installed an intake, so my next mod is mufflers as my stock exhaust rattles and sounds like crap.

Suggestion
I read a few comments here that recommended removing the mufflers and listening to the sound straight out of the cats.

I still have the original cans, but won't change back for anything...it just sounds too good!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was unlocking one of my jobsites this morning and a black 996 with bypass pipes took off from an intersection WOT and I actually turned and looked (in a bad way) of what the hell that noise was.... That has officially sealed the deal for me ever wanting to get them. I had owned a pretty much straight piped V8 S4, and (2) SRT8's and I thought those were loud, but the noise I heard this morning was just too obnoxious for a car that will occasionally have clients or family members in..
*I am posting this to simply tell new 996 owners to not trust Youtube videos because it was a whole different animal to hear in person...
My beef with bypass pipes on 996's is not that they are loud, but that they sound like a crappy riceburner... not some sort of cool exotic car. It's a very raspy and tinny sound. At idle and unloaded throttle it sounds great... but anything over 1/4 throttle sounds obnoxious IMO.
This is the kind of response I would expect from a VW / Jetta person, based on forum nic. My bypass is off the cats, and sounds better to me each time I drive it. This may be due to the cold air intake (K&N) too, and isn't tinny, whinny and definitely doesn't sound like a rice burner. I still have the original cans, but won't change back for anything...it just sounds too good!
On the side note, my heads on my old MotoGuzzi were being loud (they are that way) and the bike sounds a lot better with just the headers. Like a WW1 plane fired up, with fire coming out.
These cars would sound pretty good with the stuff removed, and it's not like we need to be ashamed of 300hp (for us 3.4 people).
For the first 24hrs after installing my bypass I was sure I had made a huge mistake. It is SO much louder than stock. After about a month of living with it daily, I would never go back to stock. Sure it gets ridiculously loud at WOT, but under normal driving conditions it has a nice throaty note. I think once you get over the initial volume change over stock you realize it's not all that wildin the grand scheme of things, and you can control the volume quite easily with your right foot. That said, if you're putting the hammer down constantly you're going to be drawing a lot of attention.
It's also possible that my tolerance is extended on the basis that this setup is very temporary for me as I will be installing a TPC turbo kit including a muffler in the very near future.
OP was as vague as possible.
It could have been a Renegade V8 conversion with straight pipes, for heaven's sake.
Unless he provides any other information, there is no reason for this thread.
That is Until i pull up beside you in my relatively Quiet Lexus RCF & Spank you & your Overly Loud 996. How Embarrassing would that be if you had a passenger & they said a Lexus just Spanked a Porsche
NO WAY!
Make sure to post pictures and dyno sheet when you do!
My other vehicle has been an exercise in more. More power. More grip. More noise. More stiff. It got to the point where it wasn't enjoyable any more. To each their own, but I'm quite enjoying the 996 as the engineers designed it, it's nice to not let everyone in the neighborhood know when you start your car.
(Okay, fine, maybe some bushings are going to be replaced. And then maybe some konis... I may have a problem.)
I've never seen the attraction of open headers/straight pipes, but then again I also just don't get the incredibly loud Harley exhaust thing. I have noticed that with rare execption (generally if a cam is part of the mix, it's legit), the ludicrously loud cars are the ones that take the longest to accelerate.
I always get a grin and a mental "what a *****" when I hear someone JUMP on the throttle...and you look around to see what's what...and then...S-L-O-W-L-Y...you see a car start to pull away...
Public service announcement: If it takes 18 seconds to make the trip from 50-60MPH, maybe the double-barreled fart cannon isn't the right exhaust for you.
This. When you are making that much noise and the soccer mom in the Grand Caravan is walking you - and does not realize she is part of a drag race - put the damn muffler back on.
Agreed 100%. If our cars ran 11's it would be different... but a mid/high 13 is waaaay to slow to have a big nasty loud exhaust. I don't need everyone in a square mile to know when I'm accelerating at over 1/4 throttle... especially johnny law.
Similar note... I used to have a CBR1000... wanted to be cool like all the other rocket jockeys so I threw on a Yosh pipe... then realized it was really neat to be able to hammer it and do it so that everyone else on the road didn't think I was getting on it. It's pretty neat ripping around and doing it pretty stealthy. Sold the pipe and put the stock duals back on and never looked back.
The wife and I drive up to the mountains at least once a month, and every so often I get treated to a Harley stuck in front making ridiculous noise while gasping for air trying to get up to the pass at 8,400 feet - throttle wide open, exhaust screaming, watching the speedo tick...

What is your other vehicle?
This is my first dive into "more". My other cars have always been kept quite close to stock. I agree with you that the car is great as it was designed, and I really don't have any complaints. That doesn't mean it can't be improved upon. Whether a turbo kit comes across as an actual improvement to me remains to be seen. The turbo endeavor is a combination of going WAY under budget on the car, finding a nicely priced kit, and desire for a little adventure. I think it will be fun project and I should have a pretty quick car when I'm done. I'll start a build thread as the project ramps up.
And seriously folks, you're all being dramatic. It's not that loud. Also it saves ~45lbs and fabspeed claims 23whp. Even if I get 1/4 of that, that is an excellent and functional mod for $150.

Add to that a Cold Air Intake for under $350 and you might get another 20+ WHP, and that's a hugh improvement for around $500. Where else can you get the reduced weight and increased HP for that price. And it sounds great too!

lol, so the kid posts the dyno graphs from the manufacturers, who wouldn't, you know, have a vested interest in making those dyno graphs higher.
And the adding of hp mods was another ricer classic.
well done
Showing the manufacturer's dyno sheets is cheating. $20 to the first person that can actually document a 20HP gain from adding ONLY a cold-air intake to a 996 that already has catback/exhaust done.
JDM math problem:
M-dizzle (Marty, but his friends call him M-dizzle) has just $400 to spend on his Civic. If for $400 M-dizzle can buy a fart can, Chinese headers, an Autozone cone filter and some black ABS pipe, and an eBay performance chip, how many HP's will M-dizzle gain at the (front) wheels?
A) 50 HP
B) 60 HP
C) 80 HP
D) 90 HP (after Vtec kicks in yo).
EXTRA CREDIT: Which manufacturers' stickers are known to provide the highest horsepower gains?
A) K&N
B) GReddy
C) NOS
D) All of the above
I test drove competitive cars, including BMWs, Mercedes and Audis, for a major manufacturer for over 20 years, and if you can't tell a HP / Torque improvement by driving it, you have a lead ***.
I'm also quite sure that in this litigious age they would have been sued by now if their claims could be disproved by a competitor.
But have it your way. You obviously know better.
BTW, I'll give you a whole $25 if you can show no improvement on a dyno.
Have a nice day.
Logical fallacy
In philosophy, a formal fallacy (also called logical fallacy) is a pattern of reasoning rendered invalid by a flaw in its logical structure that can neatly be expressed in a standard logic system, for example propositional logic. An argument that is formally fallacious is always considered wrong.
You proposed that adding a cold-air intake to an already modified car will net a 20HP increase. How we made the jump from that to bolt-ons making zero difference is beyond me - but I'm good for the $20 if you decide you'd like to compare your finely tuned butt dyno results to your car's performance on a non-butt dyno.
Maybe less serious? Just a thought.
Incidentally, a cold air intake manufacturer is not going to publish results claiming that someone else's cold air intake is worthless. It's more financially productive to make a knock-off and jump into the fray.
In the interests of full disclosure, I have tried several aftermarket intakes on my 996 - but in my experience, the cons did not outweigh the pros. Maybe it's my lead butt.
It's no less of a fallacy to claim that because the manufacturer has incentive to boost dyno numbers that they break laws to do so. It is also a fallacy to assume that these mods produce zero gains.
Ok that's it. If I can get that much horsepower and even more so stacking mods, there's absolutely no need to get one of Jake's high performance engines. I mean really, why should I spend over $20k on one of his performance engines to get a measily 30hp? I mean what was Porsche really thinking of offering the x51 engine upgrade package for ~$20k for a measily 25hp increase.
When you post something that says "You obviously need to have the last word" - oh, never mind.
Dude, lighten up. I'm glad you like your intake. I'm sure I would have loved mine if I had been able to hear it over the lovely sound the Fisters make.
I guess this is why we're all individuals.
I like my car loud. It doesn't have to apologize for what it is - an old, high miler, hard suspension, lack of creature comforts 911 that doesn't have to walk quietly.
I didn't intend for the car to be loud but it just ended up that way. When I bought it the previous owner had disabled the "quiet" feature for the PSE exhaust. Once I started tracking it the cats died so instead of going stock I went with an x-pipe. Add those two together and you get quite a wail at high RPMs.
In the neighborhood I try to be considerate by powering the car from a cold start while still in a closed garage and keeping the car in 2nd gear while cruising at 20-25 MPH. But on the open road I like to hear it sing - if I wanted it quiet I'd opt for a Camry or Tesla.
As for the power gains of the Fabspeed parts. I haven't dynoed them but from seat of the pants there is a different feel to the power curve. The gain when the variocam kicks in feels more prominent. Not sure if it's just the bigger pipe causing loss of exhaust velocity at lower RPMs or an actual gain in power but I do like the kick it gives me when revving up.
Sorry guys been working the last 21 days straight and forgot to check this thread!!
I didn't intend to be rude to anyone who has the muffler bypass.... the sounds just wasn't for me. In an ideal world I want something between a PSE and a bypass.... so possibly Agency Power mufflers or Fabspeed? I lowered my car a month ago and already installed an intake, so my next mod is mufflers as my stock exhaust rattles and sounds like crap. Just haven't decided which avenue to take.
Just to add my worthless two cents - I considered a bypass long and hard. I read a few comments here that recommended removing the mufflers and listening to the sound straight out of the cats. Well, having driven around with no muffler at all, and then with actual bypass pipes, they do not sound alike. The only similarity is "loud".
The note out of the cats is louder than with the bypass pipes and boomy. With the pipes on, it's quieter (relative, of course) and more snarly/staccato.
I didnt read the whole thread but had to give my grain of salt as I disagree wholeheartedly with the OP.
My 996 C2 has double bypass and sounds AMAZING. It's not too loud, no drone or vibrations, not very loud unless WOTing over 3k rpm.
I get complimented on the sound of my car every week on the street and even on the track while driving next to GT3's and all kinds of expensive machines.
I also have a IPB plenum and K&N intake..
Do you think the difference is because the pipes are pointed away from you with the bypass pipes instead of sideways... and this is why it sounds different?
To each his own, but for me I love the sound of my catless PSE wound out under hard acceleration.
The regular person on the sidewalk may not appreciate it so much tho.
