Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Just rained and I went out to the garage to start her up to listen to my newly installed exhaust.
Leading evidence: 'Install exhaust' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ignition coils' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. FYI, water pump and AOS were recommended to me to be replaced every 3 years, IMS retrofit every 5.

Mine ran like CRAP with just one cracked coil - it feels very ominous and expensive.

66,000 miles, no IMS remediation done (yet - will now if i get the chance, sitting here regretting i didn't do it earlier) - I have had 3 996s in the past 9 years but never subscribed to the hype, probably as my major and only issue between these cars has been a failing driver side CAT on this one last year that i joyfully replaced with a fabspeed x-pipe paired with a competition warm air intake (great sound) love the set up.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Today was supposed be an exciting day. I had just purchased my long awaited PSS10 Bilstein coilovers and have been waiting for an appointment for 3 weeks with Powertech Porsche to install and align.
Thank you 996 Shark for a smooth delivery!
Additionally we were putting in new Wevo Engine Mounts and Function First Trany mounts getting ready for the season.
Saturday morning however my beloved Pcar made other plans
Started her up drove 1 mile and got the dream we all don't dream about the miserable flashing Check Engine Light and Visit Workshop warning to let me know my car means business.
Uturn and straight home. In the garage I observed some rattling and shaking noises and the engine ran very rough. Entire car shaking uncharacteristicly but couldn't precisely make out the rattle as engine of just sport exhaust being loud and annoying.
So she is off to he mechanic to read codes, while I hope for the best.
Off to Hershey in my 1984 911 this weekend.
Keep you posted let's hope it's the coil pack.
How many miles on your car?
Any preventative IMSB measures taken previously?
I may be mistaken, but I'm not sure if an IMSB failure normally sets off a CEL.
Remember the 97% rule: 97% of the stuff we worry about never actually happens.

Have been meaning to do it for 2 years but just never got it around to it - my bad hope it doesn't cost me an engine rebuild..
Sitting here thinking 800 dollars from suncoast and some labor hours for the retrofit... should have done it ages ago for that peace of mind. here is hoping for the 97% rule
Couple years ago washed car and put in garage (6 months after rebuild of engine with new IMSB). Huge snowstorm came and car sat for several weeks. Started it and it made the clatter from hell noise, ran rough, no power, etc. Put car away for a few days and calmed down.
Went back out and started the car and all was right with the world. Attributed to water where is should not be.
Point of story is don't panic. Many smaller things can cause the problems and this is much more probable than a complete engine failure.

I waited 3 years and did mine last month at 81k miles. I'm with you in not wanting to get sucked in by all the hype but admit there is some truth to the issue but much over blown. That being said a $20k rebuild would mean bye-bye 996 so I made the investment in a LN Pro Single Row. Hope your issue is something else (probably is) so you can stop procrastinating and get it done. Best of luck.
Good luck! As the others have said, don't panic yet. When my engine went it took all of about 5 seconds to destroy itself and stop running. You probably wouldn't be able to drive a mile with IMSB failure. Hopefully it's something else.
Sounds like coil packs. Same thing happened to me a while back. Just rained and I went out to the garage to start her up to listen to my newly installed exhaust. Rough idle, shaking and then the check engine light. Buzz kill. Ran the code and it was a misfire. Took it to the shop and told them to replace the spark plugs (due) and check the coils. Two were cracked so they replaced all of them. Back in business. I'm assuming you didn't check the codes with a reader before sending it off to the shop?
Yup send it off to the shop and the good news is as you guys all suspected.
Coil packs. Getting them all replaced and getting the spark plugs done as well.
Going to do to the IMS retrofit now promised myself no more messing around with the M96 engine.
Last but not least going back to my original plan to install the PSS10 coilovers, Wevo Engine mounts and trany mounts.
All shall be right in a few weeks
. Thank you!!!!
