ran a set of Sumis that came on wider rims, no complaints until they hardened up and got noisy

We've been running PS2s on our C4 for most of it's 15 years (holy crap, the anniversary was Tuesday (4/12/01!)).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am in the process of purchasing a 2003 and am considering new tires. I have Pilot Super Sports on my Audi TT and really like them but it seems they are not available for the Porsche (correct me if I am wrong).
At the higher end of the cost spectrum I see:
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2
Yokohama Advan Neova AD08R
Not much discussion on these but they interest me:
Bridgestone Potenza RE-11
Lower cost:
Sumitomo HYR Z III
Hankook Ventus V12 EVO2
I don't yet plan on taking the car to the track but do enjoy a 'spirited' drive.
Thanks for your comments/recommendations
How aggressive of a tire are you looking for? I feel like you get what you pay for with the Hankooks and Sumitomos and you can't got wrong with the PS2, but they are pricey. When it comes time for me to put tires on mine, it will be either the Continental DW or the Potenza RE-71R.
I am on my third set of 18" Potenza rears and my second of fronts. I am very happy with them. They seem to me to offer a good combination of ride versus handling. My 2003 C2 is a daily driver, with as many trips to the mountains as I can schedule.
Went from Goodyear F1 Asymetric to Pilot Super Sports on my '99 C2 with 18" wheels and love love love them. If you have the 17" wheels it may be worth getting the 18's when you do the tires. There is a used set of OZ on the classifieds that look pretty nice.

Currently, I have Hankook Ventus V12 EVO2 on my 911. They are wearing nicely and are also performing well with regard to noise and grip. The tires have ~8,000 miles.
I would stay away from Yokohamas. A tire had a belt delamination, and they did not honor their warranty so this has definitely biased my opinion against them.
I had trouble keeping Sumitomos balanced.
I've got Super Sports, too, and love them. However, I have been chewing through them quickly (Texas roads?) and am considering an alternative. A number of local PCA folks are on the Hankook's, so I'm thinking about giving them a try.
My car came with the Sumi's and for the price I think they are pretty impressive. When they are worn through, I will probably end up getting a set of Bridgestone Re-71r's, since everyone I know who autocrosses raves about em.
Other than the RE-11 none of those tires are really suited to the track
RE-71's are great track tires, but they won't last as long as other tires.
If you want a good street tire that will last a bit and can still be tracked, look at the Dunlop DirezzaII Star Spec. They are almost as sticky as the RE-71 and last a lot longer
If tracking is not an issue, go with the Sumi HTR ZIII. They are by far the best bang for the buck, probably 2 sets for the cost of 1 set of Michelins
I have Pilot Super Sports on my DD wheels, but the only reason I gave them instead of the Sumi's is I got them for free, otherwise I would gladly have the Sumi's. They are simply great tires for DD use. They will however flat spot overnight and they are fine after a mile or so
This!
Great tire for the street. Reasonable in the wet as long as you don't drive like a moron on wet roads.
Should you decide to try an autocross or a track day, these tires will be more than enough for you. Very communicative as you approach their limit.
I am on the 4th set of Potenzas on the C2 - yes, I like them. I'll most likely hit that button again next year.
The GT3 came with Hankooks, and I admit I was not so sure how I'd like them. I have not done a track day on them yet, but in crazy heavy rain or bone dry uber hot conditions they have been fine - no complaints. Lots of road noise to be sure, but A GT3 is a fast recipe for hearing loss anyway. I'd call them a good value. The penultimate choice? Hells no, but they are not bad.
So far I've been happy with my BF Goodrich G-Force Comp-2 A/S. I don't track the car but love my Italian tuneups and I needed an all-season tire since she's my daily.
my C2 came with RE11's, very nice tire but approaching their expiration date
ran a set of Sumis that came on wider rims, no complaints until they hardened up and got noisy
I just got my car back yesterday with Bridgestone S04 Pole Position's (thanks Damon !)
first impressions, very quiet, I can hear my Tubi's. This is the first time I've had my Carrera on
new
tires, only managed about 50 miles since yesterday, but they're far stickier than
the aged Sumi's
RE11's or S04's you can't go wrong
If you get them soon, let me know how they are! I loved them on my wrx for daily and auto-x and I'd be curious to hear how they hold up on the 996. They are pretty reasonably priced as well.
I have run PS2s (2 sets) and MPSS (2 sets) in the past and loved both of them. I downsized back to 18" wheels with the first generation Hankook v12 Evos and I really miss the Pilot Sports. The Hankooks flatspot overnight, are fairly noisy, and don't have quite the same grip as the Michelins. I'm looking forward to replacing them.
Conti DW wear like iron.
I don't care for the ride, noise or grip.
I can't wait for them to wear out, but they don't ever seem to loose any tread dept
I will be in search by the end of the year also.
My situation now is, I have 18"x 9" wheels in the front, and I transferred my tires from stock 8" front rim to the 9", which Tire Rack chart stated would be ok,
however it looks terrible, so sizing will be an issue.
