If you're set on swapping the bushing out, I would recommend just going with the 987 part number, which you can source for about $30.

Suggestion · Original poster

For a bit of background, they know my car and that it's a 996.1, and they suggested switching the mount - and to my question, "isn't it basically impossible to swap?" their exact reply was "it's a tough job, but we'll just replace the bushing", and they're quoting me about $160 for the "strengthened bushing" piece (I am trying to figure out what they mean by this) + $200 or so for labour.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, So I'm going mod crazy on my poor 996. I have a 2001 C2 with 60K kilometers on it, and now I'm considering doing the mounts. I got a set of Torque Solution engine mounts that I plan to install, but Internet wisdom is telling me to consider switching my transmission mount too. What should I do? I think a semisolid transmission mount is a bad idea as it'll be loud as hell (I'm relatively tolerant to stiffness and noise, but I don't want to overdo it). Should I get a 997 one? There's a zillion plus one threads on the subject but everyone went their own way on this... the shop is charging me $170 to install the tranny mount, so I don't want to do this more than once... Any advice welcome, thanks a lot!

POST 2Original post

The 996.1 Tiptronic transmissions have the trans bushing pressed into the housing just like on the Manuals, so it's unlikely the shop will swap yours out for just $170. It's more likely that they're thinking of the 2002+ models that use the removable transmission carrier, like on the GT and Turbo models. So your only option is to either keep what you have in there already, or go with the Soft 60A Transmission Mount Insert, as it seems anything harder than that won't be livable. Be aware, though, that adding any drivetrain mount stiffeners (engine mounts included) will increase NVH to some degree.

Thanks for the reply.

POST 4Original post

Ok, it's good to know that they're well aware of what the process entails. It's not impossible to remove with the trans in the car (nothing is impossible), but you do need to have the right tools for the job. PITA either way, but if they're willing to do it and you're happy with the price, it's good insurance. If you're set on swapping the bushing out, I would recommend just going with the 987 part number, which you can source for about $30. Part # 987-375-023-05

Cool - thanks for this! That's way cheaper than the $190 they're quoting me. Wonder what they had in mind as far as a replacement bushing for that sort of price, hmm. [edit] I wonder what the difference is between: http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...375-055-05-M69 and http://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Inf...375-023-05-M69 ? They look very similar visually but there's a 2x price difference.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just an update, for completeness' sake. I bought this part: http://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Inf...375-023-05-M69 My shop took off the whole bracket to which it is attached, to make the process easier; then he just cut the rubber and squeezed it out. It really didn't take him a whole lot of time. New bushing fit perfectly, and all was good to go. I haven't driven the car yet - picking it up tomorrow, but I watched him drive it off to the alignment shop, so clearly it was still functional.
