Suggestion

There are various ones on eBay but seem to be sized in inches so wouldn't mind knowing myself the proper size to get , I used a banded type on my rebuild but it was a bit of a struggle it sometimes didn't seem quite tight enough like I needed that last little bit between the notches on the tightening ratchet , I think the pliers type or the tapered one would be best , I managed but had to be careful, if you get resistance using the banded type stop !!!!

Suggestion

I used a piece of PVC pipe (4"??) with a slit cut in it so that it would compress with a simple hose clamp (sorta similar to fpb111's) .

Suggestion

You have to make sure the bottom of the band remains flush with the block so the rings don't sneak into the gap and spread instead of going in the bores , also be careful the edge of the band which touches the block doesn't scratch the surface use some tape, to be honest I wouldn't use again get tapered one!!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey Guys, I'm looking to pick up a piston ring compressor. Is there a specific one that I should be looking for? I was told the ARP tapered ones are best? What size do I need for 3.4L M96? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

I bought mine from Princess auto. Generic - and I had no issues using it with my 4.0 build.

POST 3Original post

Well, I was going to suggest that since the 3.4l engine bore is 96mm call ARP and ask which ring compressor it recommends for that size of piston. Then because I'm such a nice guy I visited the ARP site with the idea of posting the right size ring compressor part number. But guess what? ARP ring compressor sizes only go up to 95.5mm. Unless ARP has some compressor sizes it doesn't list on its web site, or offers custom sizes I think you are going to have to go elsewhere for a ring compressor for your 3.4l engine.

First find the right size can, maybe a 312 or 313 x 512? then...

POST 7Original post

I used a piece of PVC pipe (4"??) with a slit cut in it so that it would compress with a simple hose clamp (sorta similar to fpb111's) . Worked like a charm. And the plastic won't damage the block mating surface.
