Thankfully I didn't and after six months with no cruise control had it over to Todd at trophy performance who knew it was the spring in 10 minutes.

At first I thought I needed a new clutch switch, but a little research showed that it was more likely the clutch assist spring.

In the end, I was going for more of a repair than a mod, though I understand why some want to change the feel of the stock clutch pedal.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This has been noted before, but something to keep in mind.
The clutch pedal travel on my 60K mile 2002 has felt slightly glitchy for a while, with occasional noise as well. Recently, my cruise control was erratic--sometimes the green dash light would come on, sometimes not. Sometimes I could engage the cruise control by lifting the clutch pedal a bit with my toe.
At first I thought I needed a new clutch switch, but a little research showed that it was more likely the clutch assist spring. This spring normally reduces the effort required to depress the clutch pedal. If it's broken it can prevent the clutch pedal from returning fully to the upright position--just enough so the clutch switch won't allow the cruise control to engage.
Some people have chosen to remove the spring all together--that results in a clutch pedal that is harder to depress but might have a more "natural" feel. That's described elsewhere, but I decided to replace mine. I ordered part 996-423-081-20 for about $50 from Sunset Porsche parts. Took me about 1/2 hour to replace. Clutch feels super easy to depress now--it will take a short adjustment period to get used to. And success--cruise control works again!
Here's what the old one looks like--it was broken into three pieces.
Yes, I read the very long thread about eliminating or changing out for a softer rate spring. In the end, I was going for more of a repair than a mod, though I understand why some want to change the feel of the stock clutch pedal.
This! I went through this for about six months at one point. I had three different Indy mechanics and Gaudin Porsche tell me that my pressure plate was bad, Gaudin wanted to charge me $900 to drop the trans just to see. Thankfully I didn't and after six months with no cruise control had it over to Todd at trophy performance who knew it was the spring in 10 minutes. $140 parts and labor I was back on the road good as new. It is my understanding these fail often now.
