one thing i've noticed is that the early 911's(911sc/964/993)have more legroom than the 996 when seat is adjusted/slid back.

i thought many porsche seats can be lowered and adjusted for tall drivers by changing out seat rails or similar??

A friend of mine just bought a very clean '99 996 with about 190,000 miles for $9,500 from a used car dealer.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So, that's about $13,000 US - enough to by a nice Boxster with about 200K fewer kilometers and way fewer problems. If you really want a 996 I'd say plan to spend about $25,000 CAD which will get you a car with a lot more life left in it. You may also wish to reconsider buying a Tiptronic (automatic) as it really reduces driving pleasure in my opinion. Good luck finding a car you like.
Is it worth for me to try and haggle the price down... I was thinking of rebuilding the engine.
I also forgot to mention the fact that I'm 6'7 tall... Would I have enough room to operate a manual system?
Absolutely. A "roller" with no working engine runs about $7k usd if you are going to rebuild it anyway. Make sure you are familiar with the rebuild on these engines. There are a lot of great threads with details and "gotcha's."
It's worth at least seeing if the manual will work for you. It shouldn't be an issue. They are faster, more fun to drive, and seem to be more reliable.
Take your time and good luck with your search. The 99 C2 is a hidden gem but they can get real expensive to own really fast.
A quick story, the guy I bought mine from was asking 17k with for 78k miles and about 10k of service down over the previous 18 months including clutch, IMS retrofit, and RMS. After I talked to him and knew he was interested, I told him I was planning on driving to Dallas to buy a 911 today. I asked him what his bottom dollar was and told him I would keep it in mind. He shot $15k and me and I was in. I thought that was a heck of a deal. I was talking to my wife on the way and she said "offer him $14,500." I told her the guy already came down 2k and I'd feel bad even asking. It was already a great deal. She asked what do you have to lose, all he can say is "no". Needless to say, she was right, he was ready to sell and accepted the offer.
Look for a better deal, I bought mine for around 16k with 69,000 miles on it. Only maintenance Ive had to do was clutch, AOS, new battery and pretty soon coilpacks/spark plugs. Other than that the car runs great. There are much better deals out there
Hey, I'm not saying don't do it. Just make sure you do your research and get the car properly checked out if you are serious about it. A well maintained high mileage 996 can be a much better car than a low mileage neglected and/or abused one. My advise would also be to check out a manual transmission 996 before making your final decision.
A friend of mine just bought a very clean '99 996 with about 190,000 miles for $9,500 from a used car dealer.
The car you are looking at seems overpriced for the miles, at least in the US. But, in Canuckistan, it might be fair.
I gotta agree, it does seem a bit overpriced. IMO it should go for about 15K CDN, but again other things come into play such as condition, maintenance, history.
I also found this one from a private seller for $24,500.00:

"GT3 kit 3rd owner , new paint , I have pictures before painting. Bought in Florida in December 20011.Clutch replaced with Porsche Lauzon at 91.324 Km"
That one looks like a better deal than the first one to me if it's in CDN. I prefer the C2 but a lot people really like their C4.
FYI, one thing you can do is go to the following website and type in the vin #. Scroll to the bottom and it will tell you the original MSRP and factory options of most pcars. Doesn't seem to work with a lot of the '99s though (including mine.)
http://www.vindecoderz.com/
so thats 165,000 miles - as long as the car has been serviced properly with IMS addressed, that car probably has another 60K miles left - not bad for $11-$12KUS
I have a 2001 C2 which is for sale. It has 120,000 km on the chassis but only 20,000 km on the best rebuilt motor you can get, a 3.6L Flat Six Innovations (Jake Raby) motor with 340 HP (40 more than stock). You were saying you want to do a rebuild. This motor would cost you around $23K US ($30 K CDN) including the cost of shipping the car down to Georgia. My car has 1997 GT3 brakes and suspension, a Mark 1 aerokit, and a brand new maxspeed exhaust including X cats and is in excellent condition. I will sell it for $35K and have complete maintenance history.
6'7" is going to be a squeeze. If you're ever going to want to wear a helmet, I'd say no way.
A Cab would at least give you headroom (although having your head sticking up that high in the event of a rollover...eew). I'm only 6'2", and it's uncomfortable with a helmet that can't add more than 2 inches to my height.
This is the kind of deal you are looking for. Whether this one is it or not, you have maintenance history from an owner that knows how to do things the right way. It takes some of the risk out of getting a POS with an unknown history. See the current 40th AE thread for a recent example. I would buy from a PCA member or Rennlist way before I would buy from a dealer again.
service/maintenance history is #1 - unfortunately many buyers get too excited and jump waaay too early. easy to find a great example, just have to be patient - unfortunately i wish i knew how to shop before i got married - guys on their 3rd marriage avoid mistakes, are great decision makers and are great car buyers.
+1
I'd be tempted by this too. A FSI engine is $$$. I priced one last year when my engine went but couldn't justify the $30K cost (and 6 to 8 month wait).
Well, that certainly rules out a Boxster. You're getting good advice on purchasing a 996, just take your time. I think your best value is in a C2 Coupe - for the money you want to spend you can find one in great shape properly maintained with complete service history and low miles.
i thought many porsche seats can be lowered and adjusted for tall drivers by changing out seat rails or similar?? one thing i've noticed is that the early 911's(911sc/964/993)have more legroom than the 996 when seat is adjusted/slid back.
I found this one here, not too sure about the hood.. lol

"This 1999 Carrera is a very sweet ride....no seal issues, no oil leaks ..no issues at all. I have owned the car going on 5 years and have done the breaks and other normal maintenance. The engine was rebuilt by Mark Motors of Ottawa after the original owner hit a raccoon and continued to drive the car without fluids. The engine has approx. 65K on it. I have all work documentation in my possession. The car runs and drives great and if your looking for great little sports car, this is the one. Comes e-tested and certified.PLEASE.....private and serious inquiries only...Kind regards, Paul."
Looks like a pretty good deal (I'm assuming it is CDN). Especially if he has the receipts for the work he did on it. I have that exact car and love it. The hood should be a wrap but I think it looks kind of fun as is.
Plan on doing the IMS retrofit, AOS and water pump when you get it and you'll be in great shape.
+1 on that car BUT this would be my choice car from BATTEAUX:- I have a 2001 C2 which is for sale. It has 120,000 km on the chassis but only 20,000 km on the best rebuilt motor you can get, a 3.6L Flat Six Innovations (Jake Raby) motor with 340 HP (40 more than stock). .
I'd rather find a MK2 low mileage roller then start shopping for an engine. With those miles you'll be looking at a rebuild at sometime in the near future then you'll just have a ton of $$ invested in a high mileage Mk1 that likely will need lots of other attention as well.
+996. If I were looking to buy today, this car would have been a VERY easy first choice solely because of the FSI engine......and yellow is not even my color.

My '99 was an Ottawa car and I contacted RJ Motors in Kanata and was able to get the history, I suggest calling around for the local cars you're looking at to see if you can find out what the service history is. That may help narrow down your choices.
