Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Don't remember what total $$ figure would have been but I seem to think about 1/10th the cost of a similar repair for our cars and I don't even have a turbo!

Porsche indies would say: "when it gets to a quart every 200-300 miles, time to replace the valve guides.

These passages would get clogged up with oil and it would set off a check engine light - and the car

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When I read up on all the "weak points" in our 996 (and in my previous 993), I get to thinking about what cars don't seem to have similar "weak points".
The choice seems to come down to any make/model of which millions are produced and improved little by little each year. That plus a lack of any interest on the part of its manufacturer to push the envelope. In other words, the antithesis of any car like a Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi and the like (or any British car - which on its surface cannot possibly be as reliable as most German or American cars due to unavoidable issues with the "home" labor force).
So a nice 4 cylinder Toyota, Honda. Even Subaru has issues with its "unusual horizontally opposed engine". Mercedes has had electrical gremlins since they adopted a new "modular" electrical architecture. BMW had a nasty series of aluminum V8 engines which lost their compression due to our high sulfur fuels (and sleeveless cylinder linings).
So if one wants a car that "pushes the envelope" in performance, it appears one has to give up supreme reliability.
I guess one could say the same thing about women.
I think I'll keep mine warts and all. Only other car that made me smile this much was my 360 c.i. Sprint Car and luckily I grew up and got out before it killed me!
I can vouch for Subaru engine problems.Youngest kid(36 y.o.) had his 2013 WRX spin a rod bearing(mech. guess) at less than 30k miles. Subaru supplied new long block, turbo, inter and oil cooler for free! Engine failures appear to be an issue that Subaru doesn't talk about but seem willing to step up. Don't remember what total $$ figure would have been but I seem to think about 1/10th the cost of a similar repair for our cars and I don't even have a turbo!
KCattorney: My 993 was a '95. The '96-'98's had a SAI problem. Secondary air injection. These passages would get clogged up with oil and it would set off a check engine light - and the car
would not pass emissions. The '95 did not have this "feature".
Also the 993 engine had weak valve guides. They would get out of round - allowing oil to leak past the valve rods - which would cause high oil consumption.
Unlike the 996 however, none of these items would cause the engine to self-destruct. You could clean out the SAI passages with a specialized wire brush and get another 20k or 50k miles out of it before repeating the process.
My '993 burned a quart of oil every 600 miles or so (valve guide issue) but it still managed to pass emissions. Porsche indies would say: "when it gets to a quart every 200-300 miles, time to replace the valve guides.
I had 2 E46 M3's first one (2001) had bearing issues and needed a new motor and the second (2003) needed a new SMG trans ..ouch $10 grand on me at 103K miles and then I sold it for an E60 545i that had so many issues to list. at the end of the story BMW CPO had put $28,340.00 into the car and I traded it for a Lexus RX350 the day the warranty ended.
and yes, at 112,000 miles I put nothing but gas into the Lexus and sold it in one-day private for $22,000
The post just made no sense.
Do all cars have problems? yes. Do all cars have catastrophic problems...no.
I figured that was common knowledge to all. It seemed like a rambling incoherent post to me.
