Not having Dyno tested the car I can not faithfully say "yes or No".

Suggestion
A good deal if you race, and a bad deal if your car is used only on the street.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Depends on what you're looking for. Define your expectations.
More sound? Yes, it'll help give you more sound, as will and exhaust setup like mufflers or high flow cat pipes.
Better shifting? Not so much.
I've got the Evo intake on both my 986 and 996.
I love it on both cars.
You'll find that believers and detractors abound about these on Rennlist with some thinking they add no power and others insisting that they provide good gains. (Do a search for more info)
Personally, I think they are worth it for the sound upgrade alone, plus I doubt that the Grand Am/Koni teams would have used them if they really didn't add any power (race teams really don't go for usless bling). That being said, I would not recommend the K&N as many have reported CEL's problems from that unit.
The short shift kits are also a nice upgrade. I've also done this mod on both of my cars.
Good luck!!
I know this has been beat to death and nobody likes to endorse the CAI for HP. If their only value is sound then why, as EVOMS says, does "Our intake is being utilized by almost every Porsche 997 participating in the Grand AM Cup GS series due to its consistent and reliable power gains."
Doesn't it kind of make sense to contribute a larger air intake to the combustion cycle? I have an exhaust and I'm going to do the EVOMS CAI with the APR tune. I'm not looking to shave tenths of a second off lap times I'm just in it for fun quite honestly. It's not only about HP, it is the whole package throttle response, torque, sound, seat of the pants etc...
Bought the EVOMS CAI late last night, had it shipped to the office and will do a covert install after wifey goes to bed. What can I say? I'm not proud, but she just doesn't understand.
In all the years I've been hanging around boards like this, I've never seen a shred of hard evidence against CAIs, and the very few dyno charts I've seen posted have been dismissed by the audience as inconclusive. On the internet, it's an unanswerable question.
Anecdotally, the MAF issues seem to be confined to the K&N, and even here you will find one "I've never had a problem" for every "they ruin MAFS".
To me, the idea of getting more power is an abstraction anyway. More peak horsepower is going to help you at speeds you'll likely never see. I think tuning is more about giving the car the personality you want it to have. On my car, I did the EVOMS intake and EVOMS exhaust, the REVO flash and the B&M short shift kit. The combo makes the car more raw, which is to my taste. I like that I can better hear and feel what it's doing. It feels different to drive, and it's more enjoyable for my purposes. I think that's the kind of feedback you need from folks who've done these mods, to make a decision you'll be happy with.
Just my usual long-winded .02
I have to agree that in the end any changes you make are more for "You" then others. The CAI reports of horsepower gains are hyped. But, from my experience you will drive the car a bit harder... which will give the appearance of more Hp.
I agree with Bruce.
In short, it’s about improving
your
driving experience. I did the EVOMS Intake, RSS Plenum, Fabspeed Cat/X-pipe section, and Softronic tune, and I love it. Smoother revving, slightly louder sound from engine and exhaust, and butt-dyno-approved increase in smiles-per-mile
I have to add that when I swapped out my mufflers for the "Bypass" pipes the car lost tons of torque under 38k rpm. But, I ended up picking up 2 sec/ lap at WGI. The reason was not the pipes (or the K&N filter w/ CAI) adding Hp or the loss of the low end. What it did was force me to focus more on the car at its limits (by keeping the RPM's over 4k all the time) . Now I run the car "Like I stole it"
It really was not a HP gain at or below 4k rpm... just a loss in torque. What it did do was make the car rev faster (less back pressure) They listed 12 hp gain from the by-pass pipes... Not having Dyno tested the car I can not faithfully say "yes or No". But, like any engine the higher you utilize the RPM curver (up to a point) the quicker you will turn laps. As for street use.... it is a totally new formula. Loud! Makes all the kids and young at heart guys "Smile" Also, keeps my wife out of the car.
It's entirely possible that you traded torque for horsepower. That's the common effect of a freer-flowing exhaust.
Broadly speaking, the benefit of horsepower is at speed, where the effort it takes to move the car through air cubes (or something like that) in relation to velocity. Torque, which is about overcoming inertia as opposed to doing 'work', tends to be more useful in terms of acceleration. So, in theory, a freer flowing exhaust cost you some grunt off the line, but gave you a few more MPH, and your lap times improved. A good deal if you race, and a bad deal if your car is used only on the street.
That kind of underscores what engine tuning is really about
: tradeoffs. The only people who should feel good about 10 more peak HP are track guys or bench racers. For the rest of us, it's about having the power where we want it, and about how the car feels.
The K&N CAI gets a bad rap because it's fiddly to put together and has an oiled filter which many attribute to failed MAF sensors, but I swear the power delivery in the 2500-4000 rpm range was smoother with it installed on my car, and the noise at full throttle was great.
Andy
which in my poorly worded manner (even for a physicist) was what I had attempted to state. The net result for my "track usage" was well worth the low end "grunt" trade off. I just keep the RPM's spooled up and launch out of the corners... instead of pulling out. It just is not usable on the street...
